TRIBUTEBoston held a pregame ceremony to honor legendary coach Red Auerbach. Auerbach, who won nine titles as a coach and seven more in the front office, died of a heart attack Saturday near his Washington home at the age of 89. All the Celtics had black shamrocks on their jerseys with the word "RED" in green, which they plan to wear all season. Paul Pierce played with a white headband with the number 2 on it, symbolizing the number the team had retired in Auerbach's honor. Boston lost to New Orleans 91-87.

Nick Collison to a multiyear contract extension, after hinting such a deal may not get done until after this season. Terms of the contract were not immediately known. The News Tribune of Tacoma reported Wednesday that the extension is for five years and is believed to be worth about $33 million. Mike Bibby was unexpectedly activated for Wednesday night's opener against Minnesota. Bibby, the Kings' starting point guard and leading scorer last season, was expected to miss the first two weeks of the season after injuring his right thumb in an exhibition game against New Orleans. Bibby, who averaged 21.1 points and 5.4 assists last season, was diagnosed with a mallet thumb -- an injury in which a finger tendon becomes detached from a bone, preventing the finger from fully extending.
