https://mobile.twitter.com/spurs/status/864...6004480/video/1this particular individual has a history with that kind of action. You can go back and look at Dallas games where he got a flagrant 2 for elbowing Patty Mills; the play where he took Kawhi down and locked his arm in Dallas, and could have broken his arm; ask David West, his current teammate, how things went, when Zaza was playing for Dallas, and he and David got into it. And then think about the history he's had, and what that means to a team, what happened last night: a totally unnatural closeout that the league has outlawed years ago, and plays great attention to it.
And Kawhi's not there. And you wanna know how we feel about it? You wanna know if that lessens our chances or not? We're playing very possibly the best team in the league. Y'know, we don't know what's gonna happen in the East. And, 9.75 people out of 10 would figure the Warriors will beat the Spurs. Well, we've had a pretty damn good season, we've played fairly well in the playoffs, I think we're getting better, and we're up 23 points in the 3rd quarter against Golden State, and Kawhi goes down—like that. And you wanna know if our chances are less, and you wanna know how we feel? That's how we feel.
[pause] ...follow-up?
(Reporters laugh)
[cracking a smile] Does that pretty much cover it? Okay, thank you.
(Reporter: Do you expect the league to do anything?)
'cause when you do those press conferences in Washington, they always say, "I got one more question. I got a second—I got a second question."
(Reporter: Do you expect the league to do anything?)
[shrugging and shaking his head] I don't care what the league does. I'm just telling you how I feel. The league is the league. They do what they do—I could care less.
(Reporter: Did you express the same...tone, with Kiki [Vandeweghe, vice-president of basketball operations of the NBA]?)
No. I didn't call the league. Why would I do that? They looked at the play. If they do something, they do something. If they don't, they don't. All I care about is, Kawhi's not there. And, y'know...having your horses is important at this point in the—in the deal.
And when you're playing Golden State, in their place, and you're playing like that—it's pretty cool. And...if...he would've played, and they'd've ended up winning...I go get dinner, have a glass of wine, wake up the next day, go to practice, and move on.
But this is crap. And because he's got this history, it can't just be, "Oh, it was inadvertent, he didn't—he didn't have intent." Who gives a damn about what his intent was? You ever hear of manslaughter? [pause] You still go to jail, I think, when you're texting, and you end up killing somebody. But, you might not have intended to do that. All I care is what I saw. All I care about is what I—what happened. And the history there exacerbates the whole situation, and makes me very, very angry.
Pop in 2006 after the NBA warned Bruce Bowen about stepping under jump shooters:
Popovich said Bowen is being singled out, citing incidents where New Jersey's Richard Jefferson and Dallas' Josh Howard sprained ankles after landing on Miami's Shaquille O'Neal and Golden State's Mickael Pietrus.
"Did (the league) call them?" Popovich said. "Did they call all those guys (Dirk) Nowitzki landed on when he sprained his ankles the past three, four years? The answer is no.
"So why did they call Bruce? Because it's happened to him twice? Bruce guards an All-Star every night. If he was doing what they're accusing him of doing, wouldn't it have happened a higher percentage of times?
"The people who cry about it are just frustrated about having to go against Bruce."
Popovich is concerned Jackson's warning has taken away some of Bowen's aggressiveness. Houston's Tracy McGrady scored 21 first-half points most of which came against Bowen on Tuesday.
"The league is just trying to cover its ass," Popovich said. "I told Bruce, 'You be Bruce Bowen. You're the best (expletive) defender in this league. You will NOT change the way you play defense.'
"Stu Jackson is not going to change my team just because he thinks he's doing the right thing."

"Nobody wants to do anything that would put anybody else in danger, for a game or a career. this guys history is different."

[Shelburne] Mike Brown says Pop is "protecting his guy" by calling out play w/ Zaza and Kawhi. Says LMA did the same thing to Steph a few plays later
