Rossi Set For First-Team Chances
United’s exciting teenage striker, Giuseppe Rossi, will be given the chance to prove he is ready to step up to the first team before the end of the season.
Sir Alex Ferguson wants to expose the exciting 19-year-old Italian forward, a talent he describes as “the future of the club”, to more Premiership football to take his development a step further.
"I hope to give Giuseppe Rossi more chances, because he's the future of the club, a sensational prospect, and we want to encourage him,” enthuses Sir Alex in the latest United magazine.
Rossi scored on his Premiership debut as a substitute against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in October and has been on the periphery of Sir Alex’s squad ever since. He is yet to make a start in the league, but his goalscoring pedigree is already plainly evident. In ten appearances this season - five of them starts in the cup competitions – he has scored four goals.
"He's always had ability, but he has become stronger mentally and physically,” adds the Res boss. “He's growing into a terrific professional with a great attitude.”
Rossi has benefited from being around the first team all season; he trains with the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has mentored the young striker, and Wayne Rooney every day.
"He's trained with the first team all season and he's travelled with us to every game," says the boss. "So we're preparing him for the step up when it arrives.”
The former Parma striker, who joined United in 2004, is currently at a crucial stage in his development as a player. His incredible form in the Reserves has seen him score 26 goals in 21 Reserve appearances and shows he has now outgrown that level of football, which is why Sir Alex is so keen to give him opportunities with the first team.
It is also the reason Reserve coach Rene Meulensteen told Rossi to experiment in matches. In a recent match he went through twice on goal and tried to chip the goalkeeper. On one occasion, when United were 4-0 up, it came off and he added another fine goal to his collection. Another time it didn’t work.
"It doesn't really, really matter at this level - not when you're 4-0 up anyway," Meulensteen told ManUtd.com. "[Reserve level] is a great platform for him to keep doing what he does best - banging goals in - but at the same time build his confidence and try things."
Sir Alex will review Rossi’s progress at the end of the current campaign, but the United manager seems keen to keep him at the club rather than loan him out to another club.
"We'll decide his best route at the end of the season,” Sir Alex added. “He's only 19 and has shown great improvements.”
Rossi will soon need first team football; the decision will be whether he can get enough opportunities at Old Trafford next season. Either way, an exciting future lies ahead.
