Is the 2017 F1 calendar poised to be cut to 20 races when the schedule is ratified by the FIA next week?
The German GP is poised to be axed for the second time in three seasons after officials at Hockenheim indicated they had failed to broker a deal with Bernie Ecclestone to stage the race in consecutive seasons for the first time in a decade.
"We have noted that a Formula 1 event will not be on the calendar for Germany in 2017," Hockenheim’s chief executive Georg Seiler told Auto Bild. "This is unfortunate, but not surprising.”
Seiler said there was no proposal in which “all economic risks were excluded, which was always our condition as a possible venue”.
Hockenheim does have a contract for the 2018 race, but the Nurburgring’s demise as venue capable of affording F1 means Germany’s previous race-sharing agreement has broken down since 2015.
Canada and Brazil had been the other races with asterisks next to their events on the provisional calendar, but both long-standing events are likely to take place in 2017. Montreal's mayor said earlier this week the city's race will go ahead next season.
