Ana has been eliminated in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open. The former world No.1 let a 6-0, 3-1 lead slip and was beaten 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 by world No.40 Bethanie Mattek-Sands in one hour and 43 minutes.
Ana displayed an almost impeccable performance in the first set. The 23-year-old was in command from the very beginning of the match and overwhelmed her opponent in every facet of the game. She wrapped up the set in less than a half an hour.
Mattek-Sands got herself on the scoreboard in the second game of the second set and gained encouragement from her first hold of serve. Although things seemed to click in place as Ana led by a break and had not had lost a single point on serve so far in the second set, the American re-broke Ana in the fifth game of the set. Mattek-Sands gained the ascendancy and reeled off four games in a row to surge into a 5-3 lead.
With the American serving for the second set at 5-4, Ana failed to convert two breakpoints to level and the world No.40 eventually clinched the set.
Ana was broken twice in the third set and although she saved three match points on her own serve, she couldn’t keep Mattek-Sands from serving out the match in the next game.
