Ruthless Federer Thumps Junior RivalIt was a case of new week, different player at The Championships on Monday when Roger Federer disregarded 14 years of friendship with Jurgen Melzer for a place in his 25th straight Grand Slam championship quarter-final on a scorching-hot day at the All England Club.
The top-seeded Swiss returned to top form, committing just 11 unforced errors and hit 28 winners in a comprehensive 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 win over his junior rival from Austria in one hour and 24 minutes.
“I thought I played great,” admitted Federer, who dropped his opening service game. “[I was] aggressive right from the start. Every chance he was going to get, he was going to hit the ball and come forward as well. You want to counter that and play aggressive yourself. I was able to do that very well today.”
‘Magic Monday’ at The Championships often inspires players and so it was the case for Federer, who dropped just 15 points on serve and hit 11 aces in front of an appreciative Centre Court crowd to keep alive his quest of equalling Pete Sampras’ record of seven Wimbledon titles.
“I think this is a wonderful day for the fans,” said Federer. “I always say for fans the best days are like quarter-final day or last 16s, because then you usually have the big names but you still have enough matches to go look at.
“Crowds are wonderful here. Obviously I know every corner of this Centre Court, [so] I don't obviously get too over-excited about a match like this.”
Melzer never looked likely to become the first Austrian to reach a Wimbledon quarter-final. Despite converting his lone break point opportunity at the start of the match, the No. 16 seed was too hesitant, overawed and undecided over tactics when his aggressive game plan faltered. He won 14 of 24 net approaches
“He even said right after, the match was over at the end, he hopes he doesn't have to wait another 10 years to play me,” said Federer. “He was not frustrated. He was hoping for a second match right after the match was over. That's the kind of guy is.”
Federer, clearly benefitting from a weekend off, showed no signs of dropping a set – as he had done against Alejandro Falla and qualifier Ilija Bozoljac in the first two rounds – and was able to improve to a 31-8 match record on the season after a break of serve in the seventh game of the third set.
Patrick Rafter, a serve-volleyer and two-time Wimbledon runner-up, remains the only player in 42 years to win a Grand Slam championship title having won his first-round match from two sets down. The classy Australian did so in capturing his second US Open title in 1998 over Mark Philippoussis.
Federer takes an 8-2 record into his last eight clash against Tomas Berdych, the Czech No. 12 seed, who defeated German Daniel Brands 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-5, 6-3 in three hours and four minutes on Court 18.
The 24 year old, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2007 (l. to Nadal), advanced to his first Grand Slam championship semi-final earlier this month (l. to Nadal). He has a 34-11 season record.
