TAURUS KEPD 350
The TAURUS KEPD 350 (Kinetic Energy Penetration Destroyer) stand-off weapon system is a joint venture between Lenkflugkörpersysteme GmbH (LFK) and Saab Bofors Dynamics AB (SBD). The company TAURUS Systems GmbH (TSG) is owned to 2/3 by LFK and 1/3 by SBD.
TAURUS KEPD 350 is under series contract and production for the German and Spanish MoD.
TAURUS KEPD 350 has had an extremely short development time, which began in 1998 and has resulted in a precision stand-off weapon system with unique capabilities. The missile completed final testing in March 2004 and first production missiles from the 600 units procured for the German Air Force have been fielded with the Tornado strike fighters.
The TAURUS KEPD 350 is under integration on the Spanish Air Force F/A 18’s. It can also be adapted on JAS39 Gripen, Eurofighter, F15, etc.
Technical Features
The TAURUS KEPD 350 is a high precision stand-off weapon system designed to penetrate dense air-defences and neutralise high-value stationary and semi-stationary targets.
Other features:
• Deployable night and day and in adverse weather conditions
• Highly effective dual stage area and penetrator warhead
• Highly accurate jam-resistant navigation
• High survivability of both missile and platform due to stand-off range, missile flight characteristics and autonomous navigation
• Programmable Intelligent Multi-Purpose Fuze (PIMPF)
• Adaptable for a wide range of platforms
• Modular design for future enhancements
• Range: in excess of 500 km
• Powered by a turbofan engine (mach 0.9)
• The missile weighs about 1,400 kg.
• Dimensions: approx. 5000x1000x500 mm (LxWxH)
Warhead
The TAURUS KEPD 350 is equipped with the MEPHISTO highly effective 481 kg dual stage warhead which is outstanding with respect to performance and penetration into targets. Compared to other stand-off missile systems, it offers a far superior penetration capability, and is proven to be excellent against hardened and deeply buried targets (HDBT) as bunker structures and other value infrastructure targets.
Fuze
Today’s one and only PIMPF (Programmable Intelligent Mult-Purpose Fuze), enables the detonation of the TAURUS KEPD 350 penetrator, at pre-selected floors, deep within the target through layer counting and void sensing technology.
Navigation System
Fusion of sensor data from three sensors (Tri-Tech navigation system) provides reliable autonomous navigation. The sensor package includes IBN (Image Based Navigation), TRN (Terrain Reference Navigation) and MIL-GPS (Global Positioning System) subsystems. The use of such fusion enables the TAURUS KEPD 350 to navigate over long distances without GPS support.
Engine
TAURUS KEPD 350 is powered by a high thrust Williams Int’l turbofan engine giving excellent range and maneuverability at very low level and high subsonic speeds.
Mission Planning
The advanced Mission Planning System (MPS) is used for planning and preparation of the flight path and terminal targeting, and is loaded into the weapon by the TAURUS Communication Center Unit.
The Mission Planning System aids the planning task at Strategic Command level and at Squadron level:
• It calculates the number of missiles required for a particular task and the expected mission success of the missiles.
• It determines the routing of each individual missile for the execution of its mission specific task and ensures the coordination of all the respective missile tasks within the total mission.
• It generates the Missile Mission Data for each individual missile and supports the operator in the check/test of the Missile Mission Data.
• It provides, for each individual missile, the necessary missile data for the mission planning process of the carrier aircraft.
Growth Potential
The modular architecture of TAURUS KEPD 350 has resulted in achieving diversity and capability within one single weapon system. Solutions for emerging requirements can be realised simply by exchanging or adding single subsystems or components.
TAURUS KEPD 350 can be cost-effective adapted to a large variety of other platforms. The capability to release the system also out of transport aircrafts was already successfully demonstrated with a missile mock-up and a C-160 aircraft.
