Pakistan's Foreign Minister says Islamabad is committed to the construction of the gas pipeline project, which will be most possibly completed by 2014, with Iran.
“The Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project is in national interest [of Pakistan] and the government has decided to fast track on it,” Hina Rabbani Khar told Pakistan's National Assembly.
Dismissing the notion that US sanctions on Iran will affect the project she said, “These sanctions are primarily related to oil and not gas.”
Rabbani Khar said some sanctions on Iran emanated from the UN, which were mandatory to follow “while, unilateral sanctions such as imposed by the US and European Union” were not obligatory to follow.
“The project will help to meet Pakistan's energy deficit to a great extent. The feasibility work has been completed and the government is trying hard to start work on this vital project as soon as possible,” the minister added.
She further said Pakistan was working on the project in accordance with the schedule and given deadline.
The multi-billion-dollar Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline deal, which was signed in June 2010, aims to export a daily amount of 21.5 million cubic meters (or 8.7 billion cubic meters per year) of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan.
The maximum daily gas transfer capacity of the 56-inch pipeline, which runs over 900 km of Iran's soil from Asalouyeh in Bushehr Province to the city of Iranshahr in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, has been estimated to stand at 110 million cubic meters.
The project was originally known as the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) pipeline project. Iran, India and Pakistan held tripartite negotiations over the project, which was also known as 'The Peace Pipeline.'
New Delhi finally left the trilateral talks over disagreements with Islamabad on issues such as the fee Pakistan would charge India for the gas transit.
In October 2007, Iran and Pakistan began a new round of talks in Tehran, where the details of the deal were finalized.
Iran exports gas to Turkey, Armenia, and Pakistan, and is currently negotiating gas exports to Iraq.
