Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is Best-selling Roadster
More than 100,000 vehicles delivered since market launch in March 2004
Best-selling roadster in its segment
Engineering leader among sports cars in its class
Although it’s been less than two years since the Mercedes-Benz SLK made its market debut in March 2004, more than 100,000 vehicles have already been sold. In 2005, 56,400 of the compact roadsters were delivered to customers worldwide - a greater number than ever before in the history of the successful model series. The SLK is also leading the pack and edging out competitors in the premium segment: With a market share of 22 percent in 2005, the compact Mercedes roadster is the world’s best selling car in its class. Sales of the model last year were actually higher than the combined sales of the comparable models from German competitors.
“Mercedes-Benz has been the leading manufacturer of open-top sports cars for more than 50 years,” says Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Mercedes Car Group, responsible for Sales and Marketing. “With a fascinating design that draws upon Formula 1 racing elements, and its customer-focused innovations, the SLK truly lives up to its reputation as a trendsetter and technology leader in the sports car segment.”
The SLK combines comfort, sportiness, and utility like no other vehicle in its segment. Its distinguishing features include a modified vario-roof that transforms the roadster into a coupe in just 22 seconds. As first in market, Mercedes-Benz is also offering the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, which delivers a flow of warm air from the headrests at the touch of a button, enabling SLK occupants to keep the roof open even in chilly weather. With AIRSCARF, the open-top driving season is extended to the full calendar year. The SLK is also the only vehicle in its class to be equipped with the innovative 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission.
Demand for the model is particularly high in Europe: Half of all premium compact roadsters in Germany, the vehicle’s primary sales market, bear the SLK emblem. In Western Europe the open-top two-seater has a market share of more than 40 percent. The most popular engine version among SLK drivers is the SLK 200 Kompressor, which nearly half of all customers choose. The second-best selling variant is the SLK 350.
