The Georgian whiz kid29/10/2009When he was 14-years-old, Levan Kenia arrived at FC Barcelona's training ground for a trial. Surely it must have been a dream for a kid from Georgia. But, Kenia was sent home after two weeks without signing for the Spanish side.
Now, five years later, it seems the Georgian whiz kid, who still dreams about playing in Spain, may be at the beginning of a truly wonderful career which may lead him to the cream of European football.
Kenia is a special and rare talent. At the age of 16 he made his debut for his national team against Ukraine in a Euro 2008 qualifier, under German coach Klaus Toppmöller, making him the youngest ever player to represent Georgia. Kenia was so impressive with the youth national sides that Toppmöller couldn't ignore him.
The young playmaker from Lokomotiv Tbilisi proved to be an exceptional player for his age and started to receive recognition and interest from sides around Europe. In January 2008 it was German powerhouse FC Schalke 04 who won the race for his services and signed him on a professional contract until 2012.
Schalke general manager Andreas Müller was delighted to have lured Kenia to Gelsenkirchen. "We are very happy that we were able to get him," he said at the time. "He is very talented, technically perfect and has great vision."
Kenia was expected to play last season with Schalke's youth side but he was crippled with ankle and hip injuries that kept him out for long periods, and basically ruined his season. Manager Fred Rutten chose to use him during only one game in 2008/2009.
This season has seen Kenia immediately assert himself as a first XI player. In 10 Bundesliga matches he has already recorded two assists, but more important than statistics is his overall ability.
The Georgian midfielder has fully proven by now that he is capable of facing the Bundesliga's physical requirements whilst showing his enormous skills on the ball. Kenia is a modern playmaker – he can also play on the wings if needed or in the attack (as he has great natural pace), and he has wonderful dribbling and perfect technique plus a good eye for the situation and his teammates.
It is important to emphasize the man behind the credit given this season to Kenia. This is Felix Magath, who in 2001 as the head coach of Vfb Stuttgart discovered and promoted players such as Philip Lahm, Aleksandr Hleb and Kevin Kuranyi from the second team into the prime time of German football.
Magath believes in Kenia and this is clearly seen by the way the youngster is training (extremely hard) or playing with confidence even if he comes off the bench and is capable of changing the match for Schalke. For sure the presence of countryman Levan Kobiashvili in the first team has been helpful for Kenia, as he says that Kobiashvili is like his older brother.
Kenia has been compared by many in Germany to Lionel Messi. But as tempting as this comparison might be, it is wrong as Kenia is a classic number 10. He can go and operate on the wings but his creativity, vision, and playmaking skills come into life only when he plays just behind the forward.
For that reason he reminds many of Yıldıray Baştürk, only much faster. He has no visible weaknesses other than his relatively small frame (which limits his defensive ability) and his tendency to pass the ball even in situations in which he should score and actually be a bit selfish.
Taking into consideration that Kenia is an intelligent guy, just the type of players coaches like so much, it seems he has a bright future ahead of him. He works hard, is always willing to learn, has truly rare talent and currently the perfect coach for his development. It will take some time, but then, the comparison to players of Messi's caliber will be much more logical.
