To gain entry into medical school, you’ll need to complete a minimum of 2 to 3 years of undergraduate university education, including several required science courses. Students in Quebec can apply to medical school after completing a CEGEP program.
Because admission to medical school is very competitive, most applicants have a bachelor’s degree—the minimum requirement of some schools—and some even have a master’s degree. Applicants usually have to write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) as well.
Generally, those applicants with the highest marks have the greatest chance of being accepted. However, most schools also consider things like character, leadership qualities, and extracurricular activities.
Medical school takes 3 to 4 years to complete, and leads to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. After the MD is obtained, graduates must complete a residency program in a medical or surgical specialty. Residencies are periods of practical, on-the-job training that take place in hospitals or other medical settings.
Most residencies last between 2 and 6 years, depending on the area of medicine. For instance, the residency period is 2 years for family physicians, 4 years for pediatricians, and 6 years for neurosurgeons. Doctors who want to specialize further need to complete additional years in residency. For example, a pediatrician may choose to complete extra training in pediatric emergency medicine.
Doctors must pass the certification exams administered by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). They also need to obtain a licence from the province or territory where they’ll be working.

Earnings
Earnings for doctors vary widely, depending on their experience, location, specialty, and employer. Highly trained specialists, such as ophthalmologists, tend to make more than generalists, such as family physicians. Also, doctors in private practice can earn more than those in salaried positions.
Doctors in private practice bill the government for each patient they see. The amount they make depends on how many patients they see and the medical procedures they perform. This means they have some control over their earnings, since increasing the number of hours they work will raise their income. However, since self-employed doctors have to spend some of their income on office expenses, their net incomes are less than the amount received from the government.
Doctors who are employed by hospitals are either paid set yearly salaries or they are paid by contract, which means that they are employed for a certain amount of time and for a set amount of money. This amount can vary widely, depending on the hospital and the length of the contract.
In general, doctors can earn anywhere from less than $100,000 to upwards of $400,000 a year. Residents have the lowest incomes: usually somewhere between $44,000 and $80,000 a year.
All doctors must pay yearly membership fees to the provincial organization that licenses them. They must also pay annual insurance fees.
Salaried doctors typically receive benefits, such as paid vacation days, dental coverage, and contributions to retirement plans. Doctors who work in private practice must provide their own benefits.
