Those are computer-generated features that help make each visa as unique as the people who obtain them.
Let's say you have a problem. Counterfeit visas. After all, lots of people want one. So how do you prevent counterfeits?
Look at any American credit card. You will see the name, and card number, both of which are on both the magnetic strip and the card face. You will also find a code on the card face or back that is NOT on the mag strip. On a bank card, this is the three digit CVV on the back. On a charge card, it is a four digit code on the face.
The computer systems never transmit the CVV in clear text. They are keys that prove that you possess the card, and not a forgery of the card. If someone hacks an online data store, and gets the card number, they won't get the CVV. It's unlawful to store it. So it is much more difficult to create a forged credit card.
If someone steals your visa number, creates a fake visa, with their photo, but doesn't know how many stars to put on the card, the card will be easier to detect as a fake.
The twist is, the stars are not enough. There are other visual clues on the card. You probably cannot see them, but the machines can. All these features together act as a key, just like the CVV, to prevent the card from being easily forged.
What does this mean for you? You can ignore these features, just as you current ignore the id strip in your dollar bills.
