Full name:Obafemi Martins
Born:28/10/1984 in Lagos (Nigeria)
Height:170cm
Weight:70kg
Obafemi Martins is a young striker who has a great future in football and he is winning over everybody at Inter football club.
Career:
'Obagol' as he is known by Inter fans has had a very short career as he is still only nineteen staying at just one club-Inter.
He made his debut for Inter in the 2002/2003 season in a Coppa Italia match against Bari as a substitute however his European Cup debut in the knock out Champions league match between Bayer Leverkusen and Inter was a much better game for him as he scored his first ever goal at the club in that match. His celebration after 'that' goal didnt go unnoticed either as UEFA decided to use the video of his spectacular somersaults as an advertisement for this years Champions League!
Last season he played 10 times scoring 3 times in all competitions including his Champions League goal! And he immediately struck a great partnership with his most opposite figure-Christian Vieri.
At the beginning of the 2003/2004 season he was Inters top scorer in their pre season matches which included good teams such as Stuttgart,Ajax and Galatasary!
His favourite target so far has been cross city rivals Milan scoring twice against them-once in the Champions League and the other in Serie A.The big matches are his best!
He also has half a season two years ago at Reggiana where he was quite average.
As a player:
Martins is a very small player thus meaning that he has a very low centre of gravity-resulting in Oba Oba being one of the quickest players in Serie A! It is this pace that has seen him score many of his goals, however he is also quite clever and can play some intelligent passes to team mates meaning that he is not an unselfish player either! He links very well with bigger players in the mould of team mates Adriano and Christian Vieri and is slowly starting to find that he has more than just pace to burn,he has a hint of class that helps him anticipate where a team mate is and where to pass to him.He is a very clean player who is yet to get a red card for the Black and Blue club meaning that taking away injuries he is nearly always ready to serve his team-and country for that matter! These assets of his will no doubt bring him more goals as he will improve for the future.
National team:
Martins has played a few times for his country, however he contoversally decided to NOT play for Nigeria in the 2004 African cup of nations-preferring to stay in Milan and focus on his club football. He links up well with compatriot and former Inter play N.Kanu and more caps will follow.Although Cameroon tried to convince Obagol that he should play for them as his grandfather is from Cameroon-he said no and will always play for the green of Nigeria and not for the green of Cameroon.
Strengths:
Obafemi has lots of strengths and for his size he is particularly strong too. However his main aspects of play are undoubtedly his super fast pace and his quick eye for goal.He also gives his all for the team. Many of his strengths have also been noted in the as a player section-such as anticipation. If he carries on progressing the way that he currently is Martins could have a great future ahead of him...
Weaknesses:
As he is so young,Martins is very inexperienced-especially when trying to beat the offside trap,he should learn that with his pace he can afford to be 2 yards 'inside' of the defence and then sprint for the ball afterwards. But this fault will imporove with the more he learns, after all they do say that you learn from your mistakes. He should also learn to keep his chin up when the team is not doing so well.
The one thing he has severe problems with, is his balance while running. He runs so fast that he is too fast for his own legs. He has problems with keeping the ball correctly at his feets, and he ends up losing balance a lot and a very good scoring chance is wasted.
He also suffer from un-efficiency in front of the goal, but such a thing will come with experience.
Obagol knows one thing for sure-that he has a great future ahead of him!
