Czech Republic 0 - 2 Netherlands 30' Van der Vaart
37' Opdam
The Netherlands secured first place in Group 1, and with it their passage into next year's FIFA World Cup, after first-half goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Barry Opdam earned an away win in the Czech Republic.
Dutch delight
Marco van Basten's side required just a point from their last two qualifiers to guarantee themselves a place in Germany, but they went a step further and came away from Prague with the full quota of points on offer.
Penalty incident
The home side were without first-choice striker Jan Koller, who is sidelined with a knee injury, and they struggled in the final third as a result. Yet the Czechs had the first real opening of the game when they were awarded a penalty on 28 minutes following a foul by Khalid Boulahrouz on Milan Baroš.
Czech misfortune
Tomáš Rosický saw his spot-kick saved by Edwin van der Sar, and worse was to follow as the visitors took the lead two minutes later when Van der Vaart shot in from Arjen Robben's cross. AZ Alkmaar defender Opdam doubled the lead with a header on 36 minutes and Karel Brückner's side's misery was further compounded when defender Martin Jiránek was forced off through injury shortly after.
Baroš agony
Nevertheless the Czech Republic enjoyed the better of the second half but found Van der Sar in great form, while Baroš finally beat the Manchester United FC goalkeeper but saw his 82nd-minute effort strike the crossbar. The result meant the Netherlands stretched their lead to an unassailable seven points at the summit, while their opponents must win in Finland to ensure a play-off place. Romania moved a point above the Czechs and into second place after defeating Finland on Saturday, but have now completed their fixtures.
