Lazio - Lecce 3-3
Lazio staged an extraordinary comeback from 2-0 down to draw 3-3 with Lecce, but is it enough to save Mimmo Caso?
Zdenek Zeman returned to face the club where he had the brightest spot of his career, finishing second and third in the mid-1990's, but he had the opportunity of ending current Lazio boss Mimmo Caso's spell as anything less than a win would see him sacked.
Paolo Di Canio was given a rare start upfront as Roberto Muzzi was injured and Simone Inzaghi dropped, while Lecce preferred Babu instead of Sasa Bjelanovic. Matias Lequi stepped in to the Biancocelesti defence for the suspended Fernando Couto.
The first shot on goal was from the Biancocelesti after three minutes as Vincenzo Sicignano flew to palm out a Goran Pandev snapshot.
The goalkeeper then spilled a long-range Massimo Oddo strike into the path of Tommaso Rocchi, but the move was halted for a debatable offside decision.
However, despite the early pressure it was Lecce who took the lead in curious circumstances. Babu's dipping shot seemed relatively harmless, but Angelo Peruzzi completely misjudged the flight of the ball and it bounced under his arm into the net.
There was more danger soon after when Alex Pinardi again found space down the right and a deflection off Matias Lequi almost resulted in an embarrassing own goal.
Lazio maintained the almost costant pressure and Oddo reached Antonio Filippini's cross only to head it wide, but Lecce could charge forward on the counter-attack and Babu's effort was deflected off target.
The abysmal defending cost Lazio dearly once again on the half-hour mark, as Valeri Bojinov doubled their lead. The Bulgarian sprung the offside trap on a smart Cristian Ledesma through ball and placed his low angled finish past Peruzzi.
It still wasn't over, as Sam Dalla Bona was left unmarked at the back post and his first touch let him down. Bojinov then hit the back of the net with a spectacular bicycle-kick, but it was disallowed for a dubious push on Jose Talamonti.
Oddo's free kick was charged down and Pandev had timid penalty appeals waved away as they failed to really trouble Sicignano.
Antony Seric replaced Oscar Lopez at half-time and Lazio had more verve after the restart. Di Canio gathered Pandev's pass and his fierce drive was well parried by Sicignano.
However, the move continued and Tommaso Rocchi rolled home a deflected Filippini effort from six yards to put the Biancocelesti back into it.
Lazio were playing with more confidence and Pandev's cutback reached Rocchi only for his finish to go wide from close-range.
Zeman surprisingly opted to replace goalscorer Bojinov with Bjelanovic, while the home side went for broke with Simone Inzaghi taking over from midfielder Ousmane Dabo.
On 67 minutes there was a turning point as Suleymane Diamoutene hacked down Rocchi in the area. Di Canio stepped up and coolly converted the penalty to complete Lazio's comeback from 2-0 down to 2-2.
Lecce were now being pinned back into their own half and Sicignano fingertipped Rocchi's powerful piledriver round the post. Moments later Di Canio's cross took a series of deflections and Lequi somehow pushed it wide from six yards.
Simone Inzaghi had a golden opportunity to put Lazio into the lead for the first time, but after going past several defenders he placed a weak chip straight into the arms of Sicignano.
It proved a very costly error indeed, as on the counter-attack Lecce made it 3-2 with Babu showing Inzaghi how to lob the goalkeeper from an acute angle.
It was a spectacular encounter and less than two minutes later Sicignano punched out a floating Oddo free kick for Di Canio's magnificent control and daisy-cutter strike from the edge of the box.
Lecce refused to settle for the point and Bjelanovic's looping header was over, then at the other end Simone Inzaghi wastefully opted to make contact with Christian Manfredini's cross when Di Canio was in a much better position behind him.
Inzaghi was then unlucky to deflect another Manfredini centre off target as he couldn't quite get firm contact with it, while Rocchi had a shot well saved.
