Cicinho: “I will give my everything to succeed in Real Madrid”
Following his debut last Sunday in El Madrigal, Cicinho’s only thought is to “work seriously hard” to improve his performances. In an interview with sports newspaper Marca, the Brazilian declares his admiration for teammate Zidane, whom he considers “truly unique”, and talked about his ambition to win a title this season: “We’re aiming for all titles. We will keep on trying as long as there is a chance”.
Were you happy with your debut?
Yes, very happy. I would have liked to win my first game, but it is true we played a powerful side, both home and away.
Tell us about your feelings when López Caro signalled you to go onto the pitch.
It was a great moment. This shirt produces respect. I have achieved my biggest dream and I am the happiest man alive. I have to adapt and I’m sure my performance and intensity will rise a few notches.
The fans quite like how fast you run.
It is one of my qualities. I am a fast player. I am quick off the mark and that helps me progress swiftly in attack. I like running and scoring. But there’s room for improvement.
Did you feel nervous?
No. No problems whatsoever. The game was difficult because Villarreal have tough and quality players. We had to work hard. I hope we can show our best form in the forthcoming games. There’s room for improvement.
Did Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, or Baptista give you any advice before the game?
Yes. They spoke at length. They told me that Villarreal are a good side and play attacking football. I had to watch out for man marking as they are very fast. They helped me a lot.
Do you like playing midfield?
I like playing. I have no problems where I play. I want to help the team. I have played as fullback and in midfield for Brazil. I will do whatever they ask me here.
How do you feel now that you are finally at Real Madrid and have fulfilled your dream to debut?
Extremely happy. I am only thinking about improving. My performance has always improved with time with all the teams I have played for. I am aware that I have to work very hard and stay focused to be an important player. I want to make history with Real Madrid and this only comes through conviction and effort.
What player did you admire before landing at Real Madrid?
Zidane. He’s just different to any other player. I have already played with Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, and Robinho, who are also unique. Zidane’s quality is beyond doubt, but I wanted to meet him personally and play alongside him. Now, I’ve done that, so I am only waiting to play with Beckham, who I also think is an incredible footballer. I am also proud to have played with Casillas, Helguera, Salgado, etc. They are all top players. It is a privilege to play with them all.
So, what did you say to Zidane the first time you met him?
It was special. We have talked and I never imagined that I could play with him. He is a genius and I experienced very special feelings playing next to my idol.
Do you like being compared to Roberto Carlos?
Yes, it is a good comparison. We are both fast, and yet we differ. He is one of the best players in the world and has won the major trophies. I have to work hard to get there, to win just a small portion of all he has. It is hard being the “other Roberto Carlos”. Roberto is simply unique.
You are trailing thirteen points behind Barcelona. Can you win the League?
It is getting harder and harder, but we still have our chances and really want to win it. We are going to try, no matter how hard it may seem now.
What title can you win?
Real Madrid’s obligation is to win everything. I have had an extremely successful 2005 with Sao Paulo. I won three of the five titles at stake. Now I am playing for Real Madrid and I can assure you I will win another title this year.
Are the Champions League or the Spanish King’s Cup easier than the League?
The League is complicated at the moment, but not impossible. We are going to keep on trying as long as we have a chance. The Champions League is achievable because we have one of the best squads in
