Police issue Chinaglia warrant Friday 13 October, 2006

Nine arrest warrants, including one for ex-Italy striker Giorgio Chinaglia, have been issued on Friday following an extortion probe linked to shares in Lazio Football Club.
"The warrants regard communications, which lacked any basis in fact, which were circulated in the early months of this year by a few individuals about how a foreign group was interested in buying a controlling stake in the club," a police statement said.
An investigation was opened earlier this year as the club’s share value increased by over 30 per cent, after allegations of a bid – thought to be fake – for the capital club.
Chinaglia, a former Scudetto winner with the club and ex-President of the outfit, has been under the microscope of prosecutors since March – as they suspect him of claiming to represent an Hungarian company said to be interested in buying the club.
Chinaglia, also famous for his stint in America with New York Cosmos in the 1970s alongside Pele, is currently abroad and has yet to react to today’s developments.
Meanwhile, four of the nine arrest warrants are understood to be directed at fans who allegedly have tried to intimidate Lazio chief Claudio Lotito into selling the club.
Lotito, a Roman businessman who saved the outfit from bankruptcy, is understood to have received death threats directed towards himself and his wife.
