Marco closes door on RuudDutch coach Marco van Basten has closed the door on Ruud van Nistelrooy returning to the international fold. Real Madrid striker Van Nistelrooy's name did not figure in Van Basten's squad for next week's friendly with Russia and the national coach confirmed he had drawn a line under the affair after the forward said he did not want to be considered for selection.
"Ruud more or less resigned from the job and that closes the case for me," said Van Basten.
"We believe it is a shame after we had an open and honest conversation but we will not take any further initiatives."
Van Basten has a lack of attacking options, as Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben are both out through injury, but he has kept faith with Klaas Jan Huntelaar despite the forward's poor form in front of goal for Ajax.
"Huntelaar is going through a tough period, that's obvious," added Van Basten.
"But it is a logical development in his career, after he had a great period after his transfer to Ajax. Now he has to get used to the fact he gets more attention from defenders."
Aston Villa stopper Wilfred Bouma was recalled to the squad in place of Blackburn defender Andre Ooijer who is out with a broken leg.
