Giuseppe Mascara was sent off after just 15 minutes and Roma ran riot with an incredible 7-0 scoreline!
This was all set to be an entertaining encounter between two of the most attack-minded teams in Serie A. The Giallorossi were looking for a fourth straight win, boosted by the historic 2-1 victory away to Milan, while the Sicilians were unbeaten since Week 6.
This was Catania's 10th top flight visit to the capital and they'd previously picked up just two draws, scoring nine goals and conceding 29.
Roma had the first chance after seven minutes with Francesco Totti spreading the play for Daniele De Rossi, but Simone Perrotta slipped and his shot was over the bar.
The deadlock was broken in controversial circumstances. Christian Panucci nodded in a David Pizarro cross at the back post, but Catania believed he had wrestled Lorenzo Stovini to the ground in order to get to the ball first.
Catania shot themselves in the foot after just 15 minutes of play. Giuseppe Mascara, who had only just returned from a two-match ban for elbowing an opponent, was shown a straight red card for the same foul on Cristian Chivu right in front of the referee. Incredibly it's the third time the striker has been sent off this season.
Nonetheless, a Vargas half-volley dipped inches wide of the near post, but the Giallorossi doubled their lead with Amantino Mancini's second goal of the season. A Totti low cross took a deflection to find Mancini at the back post, where his angled drive went past Armando Pantanelli. Accused of not celebrating enough recently, the Brazilian took off his shirt and stuck it on the corner flag, waving both above his head.
The Sicilians wouldn't give in and Giorgio Corona's piledriver brought a great save out of Alexander Doni.
But Simone Perrotta went on an incredible slalom to make it 3-0 moments later. The World Cup winner dribbled past three defenders and goalkeeper Pantanelli to tap in practically on the line.
Corona had penalty appeals for a Pizarro tackle rejected and Pantanelli stuck out a foot to parry Totti's free kick, but there was palpable tension inside the Stadio Olimpico.
The goals kept flying in, as Taddei flicked on a Panucci pass for Perrotta to smash home his second of the match - Roma's fourth.
Before half-time there were more chances with a save on Mancini's counter-attack and Peruvian Vargas' free kick clipped the crossbar for Catania.
Pantanelli tipped a Marco Cassetti snapshot out from under the crossbar and it became 5-0 moments later. A corner kick was not dealt with effectively and Panucci pounced to turn in the loose ball from six yards.
It turned into a tennis score on the hour mark, as substitute Vincenzo Montella ran forward on the counter-attack and coolly sidefooted past Pantanelli.
Panucci bagged a brace, but was left rather red-faced when he clattered into the advertising boards and fell over them with his legs in the air. He required treatment for a bruised knee, but was able to continue.
Pantanelli parried a Pizarro low drive and Mancini hit the follow-up on to the side-netting.
Totti added to the incredible scoreline with Roma's seventh, a fantastic right-foot volley that left Pantanelli with no chance.
Davide Baiocco left Catania in nine men in the final minutes, as the tension of this humiliating defeat got to him. There was a curious moment after the final whistle, as Coach Luciano Spalletti waited in the players' tunnel to personally apologise to every Catania squad member to ensure there were no hard feelings.
