Roma won’t split, insists Conti
Tuesday 2 January, 2007
Roma technical director Bruno Conti has assured fans that the Giallorossi jigsaw is not about to lose any key pieces.
The capital giants are arguably the most attractive team in Italy, if not Europe, at this moment in time and a number of their employees have caught the eye of other clubs.
But Conti, a Roma symbol who won the World Cup with Italy in 1982, insists this team is at the start of a great era rather than at the end of one.
The future of Coach Luciano Spalletti has been cast in doubt given that he’s been linked with a move to Milan once his present deal expires in the summer.
But Conti has maintained that the likeable tactician is on the verge of committing his future to the Stadio Olimpico outfit.
“We will sit around a table with Spalletti in the next few days, we will talk and he will then put pen to paper,” Conti told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.
“There are no problems between us at all. Everybody here at Roma wants Spalletti to stay because he has done a great job.”
After confirming that Spalletti would remain, the director then did the same with regard to Amantino Mancini, Cristian Chivu and Philippe Mexes.
“It is a priority for us that these three players renew their contracts,” continued a confident Conti.
“We have already started talks with them and it was gratifying for us to hear them say that they want to continue wearing the Giallorossi shirt.”
Roma are currently second in Serie A, seven points behind Inter, and will face Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League.
