Spalletti wary of Empoli

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti has warned his men against underestimating Empoli. “They are a very strong side,” he underlined.
The Tuscan minnows have been a revelation this term and the Giallorossi have only won one of their last four matches away from the Stadio Olimpico.
“If my men listen to what has been said and written about our next game then they might underestimate Empoli,” said the Coach. “And that is a mistake that we cannot afford to make…
“They are a strong side, on a par with Inter and Milan, and I will do all I can so that the team remains focused.
“We can’t go into the Empoli game with one eye already looking ahead to the Champions League tie with Lyon next week.”
The former Udinese boss also faces a defensive dilemma as both Philippe Mexes and Cristian Chivu are struggling with injuries.
“They will not recover in time for Saturday, but I hope they might be available for Wednesday,” added the former Empoli stopper.
“I believe the game tomorrow could represent an opportunity for Francesco Tavano, though, as he is feeling good and is doing very well in training.”
Tavano joined Roma in January after failing to settle with Valencia following his £7m summer switch from Empoli.
Spalletti was also eager to underline that he believes the Italian game is moving in the right direction after the Catania riots.
“The authorities gave a clear signal, highlighting the seriousness of what happened,” he added.
“Sometimes business seems to count more than anything else in football, but this time it won’t happen.
“[Commissioner] Luca Pancalli is the right person to guide the Federation and I hope he will stay at the helm for a long time.
“I didn’t know him before, but he has impressed me with what he has done so far.”
