Totti in doubt for derby Wednesday 6 December, 2006

Francesco Totti might not recover in time for the derby with Lazio on Sunday evening, according to Roma’s medical staff.
The Giallorossi captain hurt his ankle on Saturday in the Serie A game with Atalanta and missed the Champions League tie against Valencia at the Stadio Olimpico, but is working hard to be at Luciano Spalletti’s disposal for the weekend’s big match.
“Totti has a small sprain and has been in pain since Sunday evening,” said club doctor Mario Brozzi.
“He is undergoing therapy and there has been a small improvement, but we will only know if he will be able to play against Lazio on Saturday evening or maybe even Sunday. The most important thing is that he did not damage his ligaments and this allows us to be cautiously optimistic.”
This tie could allow Roma to close in on leaders Inter, but is above all the biggest game in the Capital calendar and lifelong Giallorossi fan Totti will do everything in his power to be there.
“Knowing him, it will be very hard to keep him from playing the derby. It would be like forbidding me from eating a plate of pasta when I come home in the evening,” added the doctor.
“It’s a difficult situation, we will decide what to do in the hours preceding the match. He will continue his therapy and we still have some time, that is why we hope he will recover,” concluded Brozzi.
Totti did not take part in today’s training session. Neither did Alberto Aquilani, Daniele De Rossi, Matteo Ferrari and Amantino Mancini.
