Fulham came close to recording a memorable victory over Roma but a dramatic late equaliser from Andreolli ensured a share of the points with the final kick of the game. Brede Hangeland netted for the Whites with a first-half header from a Bjorn Helge Riise corner.
There was drama in the second-half when Stephen Kelly was dismissed for a foul in the area, but Jeremy Menez saw his penalty kick saved by Mark Schwarzer before the last gasp equaliser in added time.
Fulham made a good start to this lively encounter at Craven Cottage, with a series of half-chances going the Whites’ way. The opening stages of the match were characterised by a typically continental tempo, but with Fulham being the ones breaking out of the pattern with a few dangerous attacks.
The game also saw an intriguing match up occurring down the Fulham right flank with Bjorn Helge Riise lining-up in direct competition with his brother, John Arne – both wearing 17.
Bobby Zamora came close to opening the scoring for the Whites on the 15 minute mark when he was almost able to divert a dangerous ball into the box past Doni. Fulham were certainly doing all the early pressing, with their aggressive edge up front making the difference. Jonathan Greening also went close - only to see his shot saved by Doni.
However, with both sets of linesmen watching the defensive line with eagle eyes – Fulham and Roma needed to have their attacking timings just right. By the 22 minute mark, Fulham had notched up an impressive seven corners and it was with their seventh set-piece that the Whites took the lead.
Brede Hangeland did well to find space in a crowded Roma area to emphatically head past Doni from Bjorn Helge Riise’s wicked out-swinging corner.
Mark Schwarzer was called into action on 31 minutes to deny a fiercely struck volley from John Arne Riise. The ball looked destined for the net but the Australian international pulled out a fantastic reaction save.
Following the goal, the Whites did an admirable job of maintaining the pressure on their opponents. With Roma looking to build from the back, they were growing increasingly frustrated in their attempts to play their way through a well-organised Fulham back line.
The second-half started with Fulham making a substitution, replacing Paul Konchesky with John Pantsil – who took up the left-back position.
Having made a double substitution at the interval, Roma came out looking eager to get back on level terms. David Pizarro and Simone Perrotta both came on as Claudio Ranieri looked to get his side back into the game.
A strong Jeremy Menez shot took a wicked deflection off Brede Hangeland on 51 minutes but thankfully deflected wide of Mark Schwarzer’s goal. Menez again saw another effort fly wide minutes later after finding space on the edge of the Fulham area.
A dangerous break on 56 minutes from Bobby Zamora saw a fine opportunity fall Fulham’s way. Zamora did well to follow up his own header and with Kamara rapidly advancing into the area; Zamora’s low cross was cut out at the last moment for a Fulham corner.
Two minutes later Zamora looked to thread a wonderful pass through to Kamara’s forward run. Kamara managed to beat the offside trap but Doni was out quickly to block the shot at source.
That proved to be Zamora’s last contribution as he was replaced by Erik Nevland just after the hour mark.
A risky piece of play by the Fulham back line on 65 minutes was almost punished after Roma seized possession in a dangerous position, only to see the resulting shot fly wide. That chance signalled a change in the game’s flow with Roma, through Menez especially, looking very threatening on the attack.
Schwarzer struggled to hold a powerful drive from Mirko Vucinic on 72 minutes as Fulham were forced well onto the back foot.
Bjorn Helge Riise was replaced late on by Damien Duff as Roy Hodgson looked to refresh his attacking options and peg Roma back.
There was a huge moment of drama in the 76th minute when Riise was brought down in the Fulham area by Stephen Kelly. The referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot before brandishing the red card in Brede Hangeland’s direction. Following a period of reconsideration, the referee eventually dismissed Kelly instead.
The ensuing penalty kick was saved by Schwarzer, who remarkably was able to get a hand to a well-placed kick from Menez.
It was all hands to the pump for Fulham as John Pantsil moved over to right-back with Damien Duff moving to the left-back position. Diomansy Kamara, as he was asked to do against West Ham recently, was left to lead the attacking line by himself following the dismissal.
But with the final kick of the game Andreolli fired home to deny the Whites a famous victory.
