Record Breaker Monday 19th November 2007
David Healy entered into the record books on Saturday when his exquisite winning goal against Denmark broke Davor Suker's European Championship qualification record. The Fulham striker has now netted 13 times in the Championship qualification campaign.
The winner in Saturday’s vital encounter topped off a memorable fight back against the Danes, who had taken a 51st minute lead through Nicklas Bendtner. Northern Ireland hit back with a Warren Feeney striker before Healy turned and executed a wonderful chip, leaving Thomas Sorensen helpless.
The result means Nigel Worthington’s team have now accomplished the first stage of a two-part mission to ensure their qualification for next summer’s Championships.
"Ahead of the Denmark match our aim was to give ourselves a chance going into the final game and that's what we have done," said Healy after the game.
"It was another glorious night at Windsor Park when everyone, including our wonderful fans, played their part.
"I know 4,000 of them will be in Spain cheering us on and hopefully they and everyone back home will enjoy another great evening.”
Northern Ireland must now beat Spain and hope Sweden lose at home to Latvia on Wednesday if they are to qualify for Euro 2008.
"We are still up against it and getting a result against Spain will be extremely difficult,” Healy added. “But we have to keep believing that we can do it and you never know, Latvia might just do us a favour against Sweden. First and foremost, though, we must do the business against Spain. The way this campaign has gone I wouldn't rule anything out."
Whilst clearly focussing on the forthcoming match against Spain, Healy was also pleased to have broken Suker’s 12-year-old record.
"To get the record with a goal that won the game and kept us in with a shout of reaching the finals was the sort of thing you would hardly dare dream of, " said the Fulham striker.
"I remember watching Davor Suker a few years back and thinking what a great player he was. The feeling now is a bit like when I scored my ninth goal for Northern Ireland and drew level with George Best's tally.
"I couldn't help thinking, 'What am I doing, being mentioned in the same breath as him?' It's a bit like that with Suker. I can remember him scoring lots of goals in the World Cup as well as European Championship.
"It really is a great honour to beat his record. I have to pinch myself at times."
Nigel Worthington also praised the striker for his goalscoring exploits and hoped Healy’s achievements would warrant a special accolade from UEFA.
“David Healy’s not like any other player – he is David Healy,” Worthington said. “He is a centre forward who scores goals in his own right – he deserves an accolade.
“I hope that UEFA might do something if he ends up being top scorer in this campaign because if he was from England or one of the other big European countries, I’m sure there'd be some award for that.”
