Final Offensive Tuesday 6th May 2008
Fulham moved out of the relegation zone on Saturday afternoon and whilst Brian McBride admitted that it had been "a great turnaround" in recent weeks, Fulham’s captain reiterated the importance of maintaining the same approach against Portsmouth on Sunday.
“It’s been a great turnaround. It was always going to be emotional on Saturday as it was a very important game for both teams. We’ve worked so hard to make sure we maintain the right focus and right attitude going into our games.
"The Manager’s kept us focused and we went about our business in the same way. We focus on the game itself and not worry about the position because going into a game you can’t be worrying about where you’re at. You’ve got to focus on the game.
“As you can expect the atmosphere in the dressing room was very good after the game but we’re not under any thoughts that this is over – we still have a job to do and it’s going to be a tough one.
"We’ve worked extremely hard work to put ourselves in a much better position, but there’s a lot more work to do." McBride was delighted with his side's performance against Birmingham on Saturday and knows a similar performance will be required this Sunday to gain a result against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.
“It was about a team performance and we put it an as a whole. Our shape was very good defensively and we caused a few problems for them. I think they were inviting us onto them and trying to catch us on the break with a counter attack but we never lost our shape.
“Our confidence has grown for sure and you can see that with our composure. It’s going to be a very difficult game on Sunday and I don’t think any team in this league looks past the next game. They have great support there and they’ll want to do well.
"Sunday's game is all we’ve got to concentrate on and we’ve got to make sure we have the same attitude as we’ve had in the last two games." McBride spoke of his appreciation for the support the team has received in recent months and revealed that Fulham's travelling fans more than played to kick off Fulham's great escape at the City of Manchester Stadium.
“The fans were incredible on Saturday and they have been since we've been in this position. They’ve been extremely vocal and extremely supportive and it makes a big difference.
"Last weekend when we were two-nil down against Manchester City we came out at half-time and they were still belting away - that can only do good things to you as a player.
"You play this game for the enjoyment and for the passion and you can see that in our players and supporters. The support has been great and our fans will play a huge part on Sunday and one we are grateful for.
Fulham Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed paid his team a visit prior to Saturday's kick-off at the Cottage and Fulham's captain revealed that the Chairman has been an inspirational figurehead during the Club's fight for survival.
“It was a great gesture when the Chairman came in before the game. He’s had a great influence on us. He’s come in and showed his great desire for this Club and it’s been impressive to see him come in and try and help us keep going."
