Sir Bobby's Million (ჩვენი ძველი იგროკია...

)
Tuesday 4th November 2008 County Durham played host to a dazzling array of stars from the world of sport and entertainment last week – all in aid of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Joining Sir Bobby Robson at the Night of All Knights fundraising event were football legends including Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton as well as Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall.
Early estimates show an incredible £185,000 was raised on the night through ticket sales, sponsorship, auction and prize draw, which takes the charity's total past the million pound mark. In addition to a live performance from Mick Hucknall, the evening also included the three footballing knights in conversation with Richard Keys, Sky Sports Presenter.
Speaking just before the event, Sir Bobby said: “To have a team of people like Sir Alex, Sir Bobby and Mick Hucknall joining us here on my home turf is just incredible.
“I know what a busy work schedule Sir Alex has, and that Mick has flown in especially for this event, which shows wonderful commitment to our charity. I’m extremely grateful for their support.
“I’m looking forward to catching up with my old friends and my wife Elsie and I are big fans of live music, we’re excited by the entertainment lined up for the evening. I understand there will be everything from brass band music to opera so there will be something for all tastes.
“They tell me the 1,000 tickets for this night sold out in a matter of days but that doesn’t surprise me. The people of this region are extremely generous and they also enjoy a good night out!
“I’m thoroughly looking forward to an evening of letting my hair down – although thanks to recent radiotherapy treatment I don’t have much hair to let down any more!
“The treatment has knocked me for 12, not six, but every day is a new day and the support of my good friends, family and all the very many well-wishers and supporters of my charity keeps me positive.
“I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful time together at the Night of All Knights and will raise a lot of money for this very important cause.”
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation will initially focus on the early detection and treatment of cancer and will also help support clinical trials of promising new treatments to tackle the disease.
It has already raised enough money to set up a Cancer Trials Research Centre which will treat patients from across the region from January 2009.
The money raised is funding dedicated research facilities including a 12 bed unit with treatment rooms, a state-of-the-art laboratory and consulting facilities, all of which is being constructed by the NHS Trust at the Freeman Hospital.
Many of the doctors and nurses working in the new Cancer Trials Research Centre will be funded by Cancer Research UK. They already help to ensure that local people have access to the latest cancer treatments by working in partnership with Cancer Research UK scientists at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University.
This collaborative approach means that new treatments can be taken from design in the laboratory right through to evаluation in the clinic, allowing promising new treatments to reach patients quickly.
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation is currently working with local cancer projects to prioritise need for funding.
