Winger Duff seals Newcastle move
Winger Damien Duff has completed his transfer from Chelsea to Newcastle after passing a medical on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international has signed a five-year contract, with the fee undisclosed but understood to be in the region of £10m.
Duff was also wanted by Premiership rivals Tottenham, who made an unsuccessful £7m bid for the player.
In 2003 Chelsea paid £17m to Blackburn for Duff and he made 125 appearances and scored 19 goals for the Blues.
Duff, who has been capped 58 times for his country, picked up two Premiership title medals during his time at Stamford Bridge.
He will be officially unveiled as a Newcastle player on Monday but manager Glenn Roeder is already relishing the prospect of him playing in his team.
"I can't tell you how pleased I am about getting a player of that quality," he told Setanta Sports 2 prior to his side's Intertoto Cup win over Lillestrom.
"I would think it will excite our fans as well."
Roeder hopes the capture of Duff will be the start of a busy summer of transfer activity at St James' Park.
