Eriksson: Milan are favourites Saturday 19 May, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sven Goran Eriksson has experience of both Italian and English football, but he is backing Milan to lift the Champions League.
“I did not expect to see a Milan-Liverpool Final – nobody did. Everyone thought we’d see Manchester United-Chelsea,” he told ‘Il Giornale.’
“The Rossoneri played a great game at Old Trafford and a perfect performance at San Siro. They fully deserved the Final.
“Chelsea understood once again the difficulties in taking on Liverpool at Anfield, as they have a truly unique and crucial set of fans.”
This is a replay of the 2005 Final in which Milan were leading 3-0 before losing on penalties after the 3-3 score.
“I am very pleased for Milan and those ‘old’ lads who I trained in the past – Clarence Seedorf, Giuseppe Favalli, Alessandro Nesta and Carlo Ancelotti,” said the former Lazio and Sampdoria Coach.
“Ancelotti was in my Roma side in 1985. He still has the same sense of fair play, desire to work hard and ability to understand football.”
The challenge with Rafael Benitez is set to be another intriguing tactical duel in Athens on May 23.
“Benitez brought organisation to a team that is certainly technically inferior to Chelsea and Manchester United. He has been criticised for packing the side with Spaniards, but with two Champions League Finals in three years, who can really complain?
“Milan are the snapshot of their Coach’s mentality,” continued ex-England boss Eriksson. “I like the team because they always want to play football, not defend or use catenaccio tactics. In terms of technique they are stronger than Liverpool.
“However, the English side have more grit. Their men have this special DNA that shows through their club history – they never give in.”
Balancing out the two elements, Eriksson places his bet on the winning team. “It will be Milan’s technique against the aggression of Liverpool – with Milan as the favourites.”
There is one man who can change the game for the English side, though, as the Coach hails their captain Steven Gerrard.
“Gerrard is a symbol of England. He is among the strongest in the world, has great vision, can score, defend and put in tough tackles like Gennaro Gattuso. He can take on any midfield position and would be the best right-back in the world, but he is wasted in that role.”
