Chievo became Italy's only casualty in the UEFA Cup after a brave fightback against Sporting Braga eventually ended in extra time.
The Flying Donkeys were made to pay for their poor showing in Portugal, as they netted twice to send the tie into extra time but eventually ran out of gas.
Coach Bepi Pillon was without several key players, and things got worse when he was forced to substitute Giuseppe Scurto for Fabio Moro only 10 minutes in to the match. The home side tried to create their first opportunity just a few minutes later, when Kamil Kosowksi crossed, but Paolo Sammarco wasn’t fast enough to take advantage of it. But Chievo were the ones to finally break the deadlock with Tiribocchi before the interval, when the striker headed home Kosowski’s cross from the left.
The second half started with the Portuguese outfit quickly out of the blocks, with Wender proving to be dangerous from a free kick on 47 minutes. Chievo were then on the verge of scoring an own goal when Vincenzo Sicignano grazed the post after an awkward fumble and Braga were again close to equalising on 55 minutes, but Maciel’s shot flew over the crossbar.
Wender then scared the Chievo defence once again with a stunning left-foot strike, which ended just wide. But the Gialloblu scored their second goal thanks to substitute Denis Godeas, who was quick enough to take advantage and tap in after Paulo Santos was unable to block a strike by Michele Marcolini.
Both teams were reduced to 10 men after Sammarco and Nem were sent off by the Spanish referee Dávila, for bringing down Frechaut and Tiribocchi respectively. Joao Pinto tried his luck on 83 minutes, only for the ball to strike the crossbar and normal time ended with Chievo in control, but unable to win the tie.
The extra period started with an aggressive Braga and Sicignano was tested by Wender’s left-foot free kick. Tiribocchi attempted an impressive overhead kick on 100 minutes, but it was Braga who went ahead through Wender to stake their claim for a place in the group stage.
Zanchetta was also sent off for two yellows, leaving Chievo with just nine men – as in the first leg. The Flying Donkeys therefore end their European adventure early, following their Champions League elimination to Levski Sofia at the preliminary stage prior to this.

Parma 1-0 Rubin Kazan (2-0 agg)
Paponi 49 (P)
Stadio Tardini
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parma booked their place in the group stage of the UEFA Cup after edging past Rubin Kazan at the Stadio Tardini.
Coach Stefano Pioli picked a very inexperienced starting line-up. With Domenico Morfeo and Andrea Gasbarroni injured, Pioli decided to start with a 4-4-1-1 formation with the young Daniele Paponi as the lone striker.
The first half was dominated by the Russians, who could have scored four times. Even though Parma were playing at home they seemed frightened of losing.
After only one minute Bayramov nearly gave the visitors the advantage with a lob that was just wide, while in the 18th minute Alfonso De Lucia was forced to deflect Dominguez’ curling shot.
The best chance for Kazan came in the 36th minute with a powerful strike by Castillo which hit the bar. Gabriel then had a goal disallowed for a foul on De Lucia just at the end of the first half.
After a disappointing period Pioli rang the changes, withdrawing Daniele Dessena for Andrea Pisanu.
During the second half the Italian outfit seemed more confident and took the lead in the 49th minute through Paponi, who scored with a shot from the edge of the area.
Parma controlled the match playing on the counter attack and all the efforts from the visitors proved futile.
Substitute Kim nearly equalised for Kazan late on though with an audacious effort which was saved on the line by Paolo Castellini.
The Gialloblu can count themselves lucky to still be in the competition, but ultimately they took their chances and held their nerve to win through.

Pasching 0-1 Livorno (0-3 agg)
Bakayoko 57 (L)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Livorno earned an historic qualification to the UEFA Cup group stage with a comfortable 3-0 aggregate win over Superfund Pasching, after recording a 1-0 away win in the second leg.
More than 1,000 supporters travelled to Austria to cheer on the Amaranto, but unfortunately there were clashes reported outside of the ground before the beginning of the match.
First leg goalscorers Tomas Danilevicius and Cristiano Lucarelli were ruled out due to ankle injuries and boss Daniele Arrigoni opted to replace them with Paulinho and Ibrahima Bakayoko, who proved to be the man of the evening.
The home side were forced to chase in an attempt to overturn the result of the first leg and created their first opportunity after only four minutes, when Manfred Pamminger tried a long distance shot, which went wide.
Six minutes later there were penalty appeals from the Amaranto for a push on José Vidigal inside the Austrian goal area, but the Hungarian referee Kassai ignored the Livorno protests.
Dario Passoni then had a wonderful opportunity, but his free kick grazed the post on Schicklgruber’s right side.
Pasching created their first opening of the second period on 49 minutes, when Marco Amelia managed to save Peter Kabat’s accurate shot, sending the ball over the crossbar.
But it was Livorno who broke through on 55 minutes, with Bakayoko sending the ball in to the net with a precise strike after a good solo run.
Pasching still had an opportunity with Kabat, who sent the ball just over the crossbar five minutes before the final whistle and there was also time for the referee to show a yellow card to Vidigal before the end.
The Amaranto fans can now look forward to the UEFA Cup group stage, which will start on October 19.

Palermo 3-0 West Ham (4-0 agg)
Simplicio 35, 62 (P), Di Michele 68 (P)
Stadio Barbera
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Palermo made light work of Premiership outfit West Ham United, as Fabio Simplicio’s double helped seal their passage into the UEFA Cup group stage.
Despite President Maurizio Zamparini insisting that the UEFA Cup was merely a distraction to his side, Coach Francesco Guidolin opted to name a strong starting XI. His opposite number Alan Pardew was bold with his choices, opting to use a 4-3-3 formation.
And it was the Hammers who began the game brightly, with Argentine sensation Carlos Tevez testing Alberto Fontana early on with a stinging effort. David Di Michele attempted to follow suit at the other end from distance, but his shot proved more troubling to the crowd than Roy Carroll.
It gave Paul Konchesky an idea though, as the England left-back went for goal from all of 40 yards, forcing Fontana into a comfortable save. The action continued to flow from end-to-end, with Fabio Simplico’s low drive being well stopped by the Northern Ireland ‘keeper.
Carroll had to be at his best shortly after, however, as a confusion in the defence allowed Di Michele a clear run at goal. The ex-Manchester United custodian brilliantly kept him out though, and was then alert enough to stop Aimo Diana’s follow up.
There was drama at the other end on the half hour mark when Tevez’s shot was deflected out of harm’s away, only for Harewood to fire the ball back into the danger zone. No West Ham player could get a touch and the Rosanero cleared. Fontana was then called into action by Harewood’s rasping drive, which he brilliantly turned wide.
The veteran shot-stopper prevented Danny Collins from heading the Hammers ahead from the resulting corner – and it proved to be a crucial save. Minutes later, Mark Bresciano found Simplico from a free kick and the former Parma ace fired the Sicilian’s into the lead, leaving their East London opponents now needing to score at least twice.
The home side began the second period brightly, obviously bouyed by their position of superiority. A good break resulted in Bresciano testing Carroll, and the ‘keeper was almost made to look silly by Cristian Zaccardo’s deflected strike from distance.
With the game slipping away from his side, Pardew opted to replace Cole with Bobby Zamora, but within two minutes Simplico had doubled Palermo’s lead on the night, making it 3-0 on aggregate. He made it look so simple, with a beautiful chip over the ‘keeper.
And the Rosanero were in dream land shortly after, as Di Michele’s persistence finally paid off and he got on the scoresheet. However, there was more than a whiff of offside about his effort. Pardew again responded with a change of personnel, replacing Harewood and Mascherano with Teddy Sheringham and Yossi Benayoun.
The changes seemed to have little effect, with Palermo now in total control of every aspect of the game. Collins and Sheringham still had time to spurn chances, while Guidolin wasted a bit of time by bringing off Di Michele and Diana. Zamparini might not have enjoyed it, but it was a highly-impressive victory for his Sicilian outfit.
