Spalletti plans shopping spree Monday 17 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luciano Spalletti is preparing to strengthen his squad after the Calciopoli verdict handed Roma a place in next season’s Champions League.
“The market is open and anything can happen," said the Florence-born Coach. “Our squad is still incomplete and I’m sure that we’ll sign two or three players as well as some exchange deals.”
Roma are said to be tracking Mirko Vucinic, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Andrea Caracciolo as they look to find a strike partner for Francesco Totti.
Montenegrin hit man Vucinic is keen to leave Lecce, even though the Via Del Mare side may be spared relegation by the Calciopoli relegations, but a sizeable difference between Roma’s offer and Lecce’s valuation may prove a stumbling block.
Spalletti is also keen to bring Azzurri striker Iaquinta to the Stadio Olimpico. The Azzurri marksman was a key factor in Udinese’s 2004-2005 success – when Spalletti was in charge of the Zebrette.
It is thought that Iaquinta may be lured by the chance of Champions League football and the opportunity to work with the popular tactician again.
Caracciolo has already visited a Roma training session and looks set to complete a move from Palermo. The ex-Azzurrini struggled last season, only finding the net nine times, but is still regarded as a highly promising talent.
The Giallorossi’s Egyptian striker Mido is believed to be discussing a move to Blackburn, which may free some of the funds needed for a summer of transfer activity.
The new additions will face competition from 16-year-old Stefano Chuka Okaka who scored the goal that helped Roma beat FCU Politechnica Timisoara of Romania 1-0 in yesterday’s pre-season friendly.

Lens want Palermo’s place Monday 17 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
French side Lens have entered the Calciopoli debate, claiming that they should be awarded one of Italy’s four Champions League spots.
“As it stands Italy will send the seventh, eighth or even ninth-placed side into the Champions League," said club President Gervais Martel.
"The tenth, eleventh and twelfth sides will go into the UEFA Cup. In our League fifth place doesn’t even get into the UEFA Cup.”
Lens finished fourth last season and have secured a spot in the UEFA Cup, but the Stade Felix Bollaert outfit now believe that they could claim the greater prize of a place in Europe’s showpiece event.
While the rules state that the places vacated by Juventus and Milan must be filled by teams from the same nation, the French side hope that the size of the Calciopoli scandal will cause UEFA to make an exception.
Currently Inter, Roma, Chievo and Palermo will take part in the Champions League and Livorno, Parma and Empoli – pending a licence – will enter the UEFA Cup.
If Lens do claim Italy’s fourth Champions League place, Palermo will be the side to miss out.

Bayern ignore Calciopoli sale Monday 17 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bayern Munich chief Karl Heinz Rummenigge insists his club are not about to use Serie A as a supermarket following the Calciopoli verdicts.
A host of Europe’s top clubs are preparing to pluck some of the games biggest stars from Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina, but the German legend claims his outfit have no desire to feast on the misfortune of others.
“We won’t be buying from Juventus,” he stated. “What is happening in the transfer market resembles a carving up of corpses.
“It leaves a bad taste and it isn't something that appeals to the people at Bayern Munich,” he continued.
The former Inter striker also took the opportunity to rubbish reports that his club are keen on landing Viola striker Luca Toni.
"There is no truth in this at all," he added. "We haven't contacted this player or any other Italian player and we will not be doing so in the future."
Toni continues to be paired with Inter, but Real Madrid seem to have cooled their interest after they moved closer to Rudd Van Nistelrooy of Manchester United.
