Italian duo for Cameroon Wednesday 19 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Franco Baresi and Angelo Colombo are set to be unveiled as Cameroon’s new coaching team.
The pair have previuously worked together at Milan both as players and more recently as Coaches in the youth system.
Baresi - who represented Italy in three World Cups - spent last season as head Coach of the top tier Primavera side while Colombo was in charge of the Under-11 team. The former also spent a brief period as Director of Football at Fulham.
The Indomitable Lions have been without a Coach since Portuguese boss Artur Jorge left last spring but are said to be discussing personal terms with the Italian pair.
However, Angelo Colombo – who recently quit his role with the Rossoneri – was quick to point out that he hadn’t actively sought to leave the embattled club.
“Firstly I want to say that we didn’t apply for the Cameroon job, but the Football Federation contacted us,” stressed Colombo.
“So far all that’s happened is that our lawyer has sent a letter to the Cameroon Football Federation to say that we are available.”
Despite failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, Cameroon are still regarded as one of the strongest squads in Africa and expectations will be high for the inexperienced pairing.

Rossi wants more promotion Wednesday 19 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Italian Football Federation commissioner Guido Rossi has called for an increase in the number of teams promoted from Serie B next season.
Rossi believes that four or five clubs should be promoted from the second division so that the clubs relegated by the Calciopoli scandal don’t take up all the available places.
This would not be the first time that such a step was taken in Italian football. As recently as 2003-2004, the structure of the league had to be revised following the Caso Catania controversy.
Catania were relegated from Serie B but successfully appealed as Siena had fielded an ineligible player in a crucial draw between the two sides.
The Italian Football Federation chose to create a 24-team Serie B and to promote six teams – five automatic and one via a play-off. Only four sides were relegated from A, increasing the division to 20 teams.
This time there is no plan to increase the size of the top flight. Rossi’s suggestion would see as many sides relegated from Serie A as were promoted from B.
The biggest argument in favour of the plan is that sides such as Napoli, Genoa and Brescia would still have a fair chance of making the step up to A and would not be unfairly penalised by the Calciopoli verdict.
Bologna’s position further complicates proceedings. The Rossoblu Coach Renzo Ulivieri (pictured) believes that they should be reinstated to Serie A as they were relegated in 2004-2005 – a season that has been declared void. The club are set to put an appeal to Guido Rossi this week.
At present, Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio will start next season in Serie B.

Inter to receive Scudetto Wednesday 19 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reports from Italy suggest that within the next 10 days Inter will be officially awarded last season’s Scudetto.
With Juventus relegated and Milan deducted 44 points, the Nerazzurri top the revised table for the 2005-06 campaign.
However, it was initially suggested that the Scudetto would be declared void rather than awarded to the Serpenti.
Inter owner Massimo Moratti has been insistent from the beginning that his club deserve to be awarded their 14th championship.
“I insist that we are given the title so that we are separated from the guilty clubs,” the oil tycoon stated. “Otherwise we’re saying that the whole of Serie A was involved in the scandal.”
A meeting is scheduled for July 28 between members of the Italian Football Federation and the Football League. It is widely believed that that the two governing bodies are set to hand the title to Inter.
In fact the Nerazzurri are so confident of being awarded the title that the Coppa Italia logo on the new Inter replica shirts has been moved to the sleeve to allow space for the Scudetto to be recognised.

Calciopoli: Part Two Wednesday 19 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to an Italian newspaper, two more Serie A sides are set to be sucked into the Calciopoli scandal.
Daily paper Il Giornale claims that the head of the Calciopoli investigation Francesco Saverino Borrelli is due to receive 300 pages of previously unseen telephone transcripts that incriminate at least two more clubs.
So far there is no indication of which sides may be put under the spotlight, but Il Giornale has promised to reveal all within the next few days.
The anticipated second wave of scandal could cause a complete review of last Friday’s verdict and may even delay the start of the new season.
Meanwhile, Guido Rossi – special commissioner of the Italian Football Federation – has called for an increase in the number of sides promoted from Serie B next term.
Rossi believes that three rather than two sides should be automatically promoted from the second tier due to the number of big clubs now competing in Serie B.
