Axed Gentile left fuming Saturday 22 July, 2006

Claudio Gentile has hit out at the Italian Football Federation after he was informed that his reign as Under-21 boss is over.
The Juventus great was told on Friday that he would not be offered a new contract and the way he has been disposed of has clearly angered the 1982 World Cup winner.
“[FIGC commissioner Guido] Rossi phone me to tell me that I was no longer a part of the Federation and therefore to consider myself a free agent,” said the legendary stopper.
“I replied by reminding him that he knew about all of the possibilities I’d had recently to find myself a new job, seeing as I had informed them.
“However, they, through Demetrio Albertini, told me to stay calm and that an agreement would be reached after the World Cup…
“I certainly feel betrayed because now I don’t have the chance to go elsewhere, I’m now unemployed.”
The fact that Gentile hasn’t been told why he was axed has made the decision even harder to digest and he’s taken the opportunity to take a swipe at new FIGC official Albertini.
“I wasn’t told why I’ve been let go and this makes it all even more disappointing,” continued the tactician.
“There is also the fact that Albertini wasn’t even the one who told me after our telephone contact previously. He evidently doesn’t have a clear conscience.
“If this is the new regime at the Federation then we are in bad shape, it seems to me that nothing has changed.”
Gentile has confirmed rumours that he’s been offered a directors role at Juventus, but he’s rejected that option.
“For now, that position is of no interest,” he underlined. “I want to continue to be a Coach.”
Gentile joined the Federation’s coaching ranks with the Under-20 side in 1998 and then acted as an assistant for Giovanni Trapattoni with the full side from October 2000.
He was named Under-21 boss in October 2002 and ends his stint with 41 victories, 15 draws and 12 losses from 68 games.
He led the side to the European title in 2004 and won the Bronze Medal at the Sydney Olympics just a few months later.
Contenders to replace him on the Azzurrini bench include Milan assistant Mauro Tassotti – who reportedly isn’t too keen – former Juve stopper Ciro Ferrara and Inter legend Beppe Bergomi.
