Donadoni offers Cassano lifeline Monday 7 August, 2006

New Italy boss Roberto Donadoni has opened the door for Real Madrid flop Antonio Cassano to win an international recall.
The former Bari and Roma starlet rarely featured under previous boss Marcello Lippi and missed out on a Germany 2006 place after his January switch to Real failed to have the desired effects.
However, the former Azzurri winger has confirmed that he is ready to embrace the youngster’s prodigal skills after the 24-year-old scored just one Liga goal last term.
“Cassano is a great talent and I think he has already proved that despite his ups and downs,” said the tactician. “However, now he has to do his best and show that he deserves the Nazionale.”
Much is expected of Cassano this term after his former Roma mentor Fabio Capello joined him in Spain this summer.
“I trust that Capello will be of great use to Cassano as he is the best possible trainer for the player,” underlined Donadoni who himself was bossed by Don Fabio at Milan.
Meanwhile, Donadoni has told fans that his new Italian side will be just as hungry as the one that won the World Cup.
“I will try to give new motivation to the team even it’s never easy to start again after such an exciting experience,” he told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.
“But I want to be clear about one thing – those who are not hungry are automatically out of the game,” he warned. “I don’t want lack of enthusiasm to jeopardise our work.”
Donadoni will make his debut on the Azzurri bench on August 16 in a Livorno friendly against Croatia.
The 42-year-old was appointed as Marcello Lippi’s successor on July 16, just four days after the Berlin triumph, to become the youngest Italy Coach in the last 60 years.
