Madrid- Real Madrid are keen to sign veteran centre-back Roberto Ayala from Spanish football league rivals Valencia before Thursday's transfer deadline, with talks reportedly set for later Wednesday. The Argentine Ayala is in dispute with Valencia and desperate to leave.
Real coach Fabio Capello is anxious to sign another central defender, at the same time as offloading Ivan Helguera, Francisco Pavon and Jonathan Woodgate.
Ayala's agent, Gustavo Mascardi, was reportedly set to travel to Madrid later Wednesday to meet with Franco Baldini, Capello's assistant with regard to transfers.
Baldini may suggest a swap with Valencia of Helguera for Ayala.
If Real do sign Ayala, 33, not only will they have the oldest defence in Europe but they will also need to get rid of a non-EU player since Ayala does not have a European passport.
In that case, Real would be keen to quickly sell off, or loan out, Cicinho or Julio Baptista, who are both Brazilians
