Pennant aims to fly England flag Jermaine Pennant is hoping that regular UEFA Champions League football with new club Liverpool will be enough to catapult him into the England reckoning under Steve McClaren. The livewire winger was offered a Premiership lifeline by The Reds after suffering relegation with Birmingham City last season, and started as Rafa Benitez's men secured their passage to the group stages of Europe's biggest competition against Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday.
After failing to impress with Arsenal, Pennant now has another shot at making a name for himself at one of England's biggest sides, and the 23-year-old has a first international cap firmly in his sights.
McClaren made a clear division between his own rule and that of predecessor Sven Goran Eriksson by dropping former Three Lions captain David Beckham, and despite a number of other options on the right of midfield Pennant believes he can make a real case for inclusion this season if he shines in Europe.
"It can only improve my England chances," said Pennant.
"If you're proving yourself in the Champions League and playing well, it's going to be at the back of the England manager's mind to pick you.
"The more I play in these games, the better it's going to be for me. This is why I came to Liverpool.
"The only thing left for me is to play for my country and if that could happen it would be a great turnaround for me.
"With Becks out of the team, it's there for the taking.
"England have already got two players for that role in Shaun Wright-Phillips and Aaron Lennon, while Steven Gerrard showed he could play there too.
"It's going to be difficult but I can offer something different."
