Spotlight: Bow down to Bresciano Monday 23 October, 2006
Football Italia rounds up the winners and the losers from Week 7 of the Serie A season.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Winners…
Mark Bresciano (Palermo)
He ran Milan ragged at the San Siro and made Alessandro Nesta look a fool, which is no simple task. The Socceroos star was always alert, taking advantage of every defensive error to create the goals that put Palermo back on top of the table. So far he has definitely been the Sicilians’ best summer investment and, if he continues like this, could get himself a Scudetto medal.
Luigi Del Neri (Chievo)
He came, he saw, he conquered… a point. It may not seem much, but it equals predecessor Bepi Pillon’s tally from the previous six games. It can’t have been easy to make his comeback on the Chievo bench against a club that had fired him two seasons ago, but he continued to make the Roma fans hate him by preventing them from topping the table.
Christian Abbiati (Torino)
Vilified by the Press and supporters for a series of howlers this season, the Granata goalkeeper proved just why he’s an international with a magnificent display in Sardinia. Cagliari could easily have won by three or four, but Abbiati performed heroics – in particular a low one-handed save on David Suazo’s header that resembled the legendary Gordon Banks stop.
Losers…
Attilio Tesser (Ascoli)
It’s becoming clear now why Cagliari sacked him after just one game last year. Ascoli are shapeless and look like a team set adrift in a total void of ideas. “I don’t risk the sack. The team is behind me,” insisted the Coach, but time is running short.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter)
Consistently booed at the Stadio Friuli and not just by the Udinese fans. Failing to score when you are a striker is understandable, but not when you persist in trying to do a spectacular turn or trick every time you get the ball. With Alvaro Recoba in the side too, Inter will earn themselves the title of ‘Pretty, but useless.’
Alberto Gilardino (Milan)
It’s well known the ex-Parma striker starts seasons relatively slowly, but this term has been abysmal even by his standards. Not only is he a ghost wandering around aimlessly, he also managed to repeatedly get in the way of teammate Pippo Inzaghi during the 2-0 defeat to Palermo. Carlo Ancelotti is going to have to choose between them and right now Gila’s heading for the bench, although with his current form he’d probably miss and land on the floor.
The goals…
Adrian Mutu (Fiorentina)
He wasn’t 100 per cent fit. If he had been, perhaps this shot would’ve burst the net. The Romanian picked up the ball in midfield and rushed forward to unleash a rocket that slotted into the top corner from 25 metres. Unstoppable.
Riccardo Zampagna (Atalanta)
There could be no better way to win a match in the final minute that you had been losing 2-0. Nicola Ventola flicked on a long pass for Zampagna, who called out the Sampdoria goalkeeper before placing a perfect lob into the empty net. Sheer class.
Fabio Quagliarella (Sampdoria)
Either of his goals at the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia would be worthy of this list, but it’s the first that earns his spot. He required tenacity to battle past two defenders and was remarkably alert to pounce on the ricochet, immediately thumping home under the bar. A goal out of nothing.
The numbers…
Decisive Doni
Cristiano Doni has scored three goals in the last two games, proving crucial in earning Atalanta an extra five points. Igor Budan also deserves praise, as all four of Parma’s points this season were decided by his goals against Torino and Ascoli.
Rossoneri conquered
Milan lose their unbeaten home record in Serie A after 20 wins and three draws, as the last side to emerge from here with a victory was Juventus on May 8, 2005. Palermo’s triumph is an historic one, their first ever in the top flight at San Siro. Inter are now the only side in the League without a defeat after just seven rounds.
Lazio record
Dida had gone 446 minutes of Serie A football without conceding a goal, but Lazio have beaten that record for the current campaign by just 120 seconds. Between Angelo Peruzzi and Marco Ballotta, the Biancocelesti held out for 448 minutes before Giuseppe Colucci of Catania broke through.
