Football Italia rounds up the winners and the losers from Week 15 of the Serie A season
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The winners…
Armando Pantanelli (Catania)
If Catania are flying high in the last Champions League spot then it is because of their goalkeeper. The handy custodian made a string of fine saves for the Elefanti against Udinese as he answered every question asked of him. It may have taken him until he was 35 to reach the top level, but he’s proving he’s good enough for Serie A.
Amauri (Palermo)
The big Brazilian is back to his devastating best and was again compared to Didier Drogba by his grateful Coach on Saturday. The striker looked in great physical shape and proved a real handful for the shaky Livorno defence throughout the 90 minutes. He was undoubtedly the Man of the Match in Palermo.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter)
Having been released from the shackles of Fabio Capello’s tactics, the super Swede is thriving under the tutelage of Roberto Mancini this term. He basically did what he wanted at Empoli and netted a fine goal as his reward. Yet it wouldn’t have been a typical Ibra show if he didn’t miss a sitter or two…
The losers…
Samuel Kuffour (Livorno)
Ever wondered why Roma let Samuel Kuffour leave the Olimpico in the summer? The answer was on show in the 90 minutes at Palermo. The former Bayern Munich stopper hardly covered himself in glory during the tie as the Rosanero ripped his side to pieces at times.
Victor Obinna (Chievo)
After two braces in two games, Chievo’s attacking potential was in his feet against Fiorentina. Yet the sprightly Nigerian put in a rather flat performance at the Bentegodi. He was well controlled by the visitors and rarely looked dangerous throughout the game. A real disappointment.
Alberto Gilardino (Milan)
Where has the young boy who couldn’t stop scoring gone? Alberto Gilardino is going through the worst patch of form since he exploded on to the scene at Parma. The World Cup winner struggled again against Toro and then couldn’t even score from the spot after he fell over and was ludicrously awarded a penalty.
The goals…
Cristiano Doni (Atalanta)
The Atalanta star just doesn’t do tap-ins. His latest Serie A strike was another sublime advertisement for fantasy football and was also crucial in netting the three points. Doni expertly chested a cross on the edge of the six-yard box and with his back to goal, rippled the net with a sharp scissor-kick.
Nicolas Cordova (Messina)
There had only been 13 free-kick goals in Serie A so far this term before Cordova’s gem in Bergamo. The South American expertly floated the ball over the Atalanta wall to beat Alex Calderoni with an accurate curler.
Cristian Ledesma (Lazio)
The Argentine opened his Lazio account with a derby goal that he is unlikely to forget. Having picked up the ball approximately 30 yards from goal, he struck it – almost from a static standing position – with such venom and accuracy that Alexander Doni could only watch it pierce his top corner.
The numbers…
Eight in a row
Inter’s 3-0 victory at Empoli was a club record equalling eighth successive League win. The Nerazzurri have achieved the feat on three occasions in the past in 1939-40, 1964-65 and 1988-89. Roberto Mancini’s boys have now gone 16 games in the top flight without tasting defeat – with the last coming at Empoli thanks to a bizarre Marco Materazzi own goal.
Doni and dusted
Cristano Doni’s goal against Messina was not only his sixth of the campaign, but it also allowed him to become the club’s all-time League top scorer with Cominelli. The latter grabbed 61 with 18 in Serie A and 43 in the Second Division. Doni has 39 in the top flight, 22 in the lower tier.
Blankety blank
Draw specialists Cagliari were back to their best with a 0-0 against Parma. The Rossoblu have collected 10 draws this term, including five scoreless ties. The Sardinians have now collected just two points in three games.
