Football Italia rounds up the winners and the losers from Week 24 of the Serie A season
The winners…
Ronaldo (Milan)
Serie A fans hadn't seen that Ronaldo goal smile for five years, but it returned on Saturday in a performance which underlined that this guy is by no means finished. Two goals – to take his Italian tally to 51 – and an assist, what more do you want from a player who is still not physically at his best? He can lead Milan back into the Champions League places.
Massimo Maccarone (Siena)
He led the line for his side against Milan as if he’d been at Siena for years. His teammates continually looked for his runs and they were rewarded as the former Under-21 international ruptured the net with confidence. There is a decent player in him, Middlesbrough just didn’t look hard enough.
Stefano Fiore (Livorno)
Torino fans suffered a double defeat at the weekend. Not only did they lose again, but the man who boss Alberto Zaccheroni thought was surplus to requirements in Turin stole the show for new club Livorno. He worked wonders behind striker Cristiano Lucarelli and even opened his Amaranto account – with the considerable help of the Messina ‘keeper.
The losers…
Antonio Langella (Cagliari)
He may have been facing Inter, but Antonio Langella again failed to show up for his Cagliari side this weekend. A performance that lacked any kind of effort or inspiration, his substitution was inevitable. And this man once played for Italy…
Christian Wilhelmsson (Roma)
After some fine performances since his January arrival, the Swede was given a starting shirt at Empoli and subsequently misfired. A cool first-half back-heel to Francesco Totti wasn’t enough to avoid being replaced by an equally unimpressive Rodrigo Taddei.
Kakha Kaladze (Milan)
A side like Milan can’t go to Siena and concede three goals. Although he wasn’t specifically at fault for all, the Georgian was in charge of marshalling the defence at the Artemio Franchi. Similar distractions at Celtic in midweek could prove costly.
The goals…
Nicola Pozzi (Empoli)
Empoli took a shock win over Roma thanks to Nicola Pozzi’s first League goal of the season. The youngster lost Matteo Ferrari and blasted home Antonio Busce’s centre first time on the turn. The precise and powerful execution left Alexander Doni with little chance of making a save.
Ricardo Oliveira (Milan)
Oliveira’s goal was made in Brazil. Kaka started the move on the half-hour mark, he found Ronaldo on the edge of the box who subsequently passed to Oliveira. The summer signing then instantly unleashed a precise low drive into the far corner.
Fabio Quagliarella (Sampdoria)
The in-form striker grabbed another Serie A goal with some style as he bagged the winner at Parma. January signing Reto Ziegler threaded a through ball to the attacker who delicately chipped over Luca Bucci.
The numbers…
Emphatic Empoli
Empoli underlined their golden moment with a 1-0 over Roma. The Azzurri have collected 10 points from the last four rounds, the same record as Milan! Only Inter have done better with their 16 straight wins.
Second best
Inter’s win at the weekend saw them move 14 points clear of Roma – the largest margin at any point of a season between first and second since the three points for a win rule was introduced. The biggest previous gap after Week 23 was eight points when Inter trailed Juventus last term.
Bull run
Torino are in crisis. The Granata’s defeat at Lazio was their fourth straight loss on the road. The Turin giants have now collected just one point from seven games. Will boss Alberto Zaccheroni get a chance to improve that record?
