Football Italia rounds up the winners and the losers from Week 25 of the Serie A season
The winners…
Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)
The Italian international reminded the big clubs of his ability yet again on Sunday with a stunning performance against Parma. Di Natale stole the show in a Friuli thriller with a brace and some splendid assists throughout.
Tommaso Rocchi (Lazio)
The fact that he was given a standing ovation by the Cagliari fans says it all about his Sunday afternoon’s work. Rocchi was full of life for Lazio and their inspiration in Sardinia. Everything about his goal was simply fantastic.
Erjon Bogdani (Chievo)
Few were expecting too much from Bogdani after his January switch to Chievo. Why would they? He was awful at Siena before his transfer. But the powerful striker silenced his critics as he sent Torino crashing to their sixth straight defeat with a double of the highest quality.
The losers…
Antonio Langella (Cagliari)
If there was an Oscar handed out for the worst performance of the season then Langella would win it for his 19 minutes against Lazio. Thrown on as a substitute with it all to prove after a problematic campaign, he managed to get booked for kicking the ball away and then sent-off for a horror challenge on Manuel Belleri.
Ruben Olivera (Sampdoria)
Another player affected by brain failure over the weekend was Olivera. With his side a man up against Milan given the expulsion of Massimo Oddo, the Uruguayan managed to stupidly join him. He was booked for forgetting to put his shin pads on and then unnecessarily extended his left boot to foul Kaka who was going nowhere.
Christian Abbiati (Torino)
Where is that goalkeeper who, apart from a few initial mistakes, was so influential in Juventus’ Scudetto winning campaign last season? Abbiati’s disastrous season continued at Verona on Saturday with another uncertain display. He was arguably at fault for both Bogdani goals and he must take some responsibility in the Granata’s recent losing streak.
The goals…
Tommaso Rocchi (Lazio)
The Italian made sure of the points at Cagliari with a trademark Alex Del Piero special. Rocchi expertly controlled a ball over the top, cut inside his marker and curled his right-foot dreamer into the angle of the post and bar.
Edgar Alvarez (Messina)
The substitute delivered the knock-out blow at the San Filippo with a crash, bang, wallop goal that oozed with the wow factor. With a loose ball outside of the area asking to be hit, Alvarez stepped up with a first time effort which punched the back of the net.
Igor Budan (Parma)
Parma took the lead at Udinese thanks to Budan’s gutsy effort. Distance was no obstacle for the forward as he unleashed a rocket from 30 yards which caught out ‘keeper Massimo De Sanctis.
The numbers…
Coach trip
The change of Coach at Cagliari seems to have been a waste of time. Franco Colomba has netted just seven points in eight games, while predecessor Marco Giampaolo averaged a point per match. Lazio’s win at Cagliari was also their first since a 1-0 at Sant’Elia in 1995-96.
Away the lads
Inter’s win at Cesena against Catania saw them collect their ninth straight win on the road, equaling Milan’s runs of 1991-92 and 1992-93. They’ve also won 11 away games this term which sees them draw level with their previous seasonal bests in 1963-64 and 1988-89.
Gemelli del Gol
Fiorentina's Luca Toni and Adrian Mutu confirmed themselves as Serie A’s most lethal scoring combination on Sunday. Their goals against Empoli saw them move on to 24 this season - Toni with 13 and Mutu on 11 - three more than Roma duo Francesco Totti and Amantino Mancini.
