Football Italia rounds up the winners and the losers from Week 28 of the Serie A season
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The winners…
Francesco Totti (Roma)
He’s probably Italy’s most gifted player and he again underlined his repertoire of skills in the 3-1 over Udinese. Despite missing six spot-kicks so far this season, he confidently tucked home his penalty before adding a second as well as an assist. The Azzurri will need him against Scotland, but will he answer the call?
Alessandro Rosina (Torino)
They call him ‘Rosinaldo’ and it was easy to see why against Catania. The Italian Under-21 international ran the Sicilians ragged at the Olimpico, twisting and turning defenders with his all too rare dribbling skills. It was his solo goal that ensured the points and he’s undoubtedly one to watch.
Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos (Ascoli)
The Greek goalkeeper, with just 10 Serie A appearances to his name before the start of this term, had become a figure of fun in Italian football. Having spent less than a month at Milan and then becoming a prolonged tourist while at Roma, he’s been immense since stepping in for Gianluca Pagliuca at Ascoli over the last month. The three points against Siena were thanks to him.
The losers…
Giovanni Pasquale (Livorno)
His dismissal against Empoli left his teammates a man down after just 26 minutes. Although there are doubts as to how much intent there was in the incident, if you raise your arm and leave an opponent with a bloody nose then you’re asking for trouble.
Gennaro Delvecchio (Sampdoria)
Although never the prettiest player to watch, the combative midfielder who caught the eye of Italy boss Roberto Donadoni at the start of the season has disappeared. Having returned to the starting line-up thanks to Sergio Volpi’s injury, he disappointed against Cagliari and his substitution was inevitable.
Marek Jankulovksi (Milan)
One of a number of Milan players who failed to live up to the occasion of the Derby della Madonnina. Having little space to play with down the flank, the Czech ace struggled to make the sort of impact he has accustomed us to this season.
The goals…
Edison Cavani (Palermo)
Some players take months to make an impact in a new League, the Uruguayan took a matter of minutes. Having come on as a substitute against Fiorentina, he netted a sublime right-footed volley from the corner of the penalty area. Simply incredible!
Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria)
The Sampdoria midfielder doesn’t net many, but his strike against Cagliari was certainly worth waiting for. A Fabio Quagliarella cross from the right was punched to a safe distance away from goal, only for Palombo to volley the ball from 25 yards over the head of the helpless Marco Fortin.
Giacomo Tedesco (Reggina)
If you like precision and power in your goals, look no further than this one. A Rolando Bianchi dummy saw the ball run free for Giacomo Tedesco to unleash a rocket from 25 yards into the top corner of the Lazio net.
The numbers…
At the double
Inter’s 2-1 win over Milan, coupled with their 4-3 earlier this season, saw them triumph in both derbies for the first time since the 1981-82 season. The Nerazzurri have now gone 27 games unbeaten, while Milan lose for the first time this year after nine wins and six draws.
Fifth element
Ronaldo’s goal at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday was his fifth in a Milan derby, having scored his previous four in the Nerazzurri shirt. It was also his third goal for the Rossoneri since his January switch from Real Madrid.
Cloud nine
Roma’s 3-1 victory over Udinese was their ninth straight League win at the Stadio Olimpico and their 11th in total this term. However, the Gyan Asamoah goal did infuriate goalkeeper Alexander Doni seeing as he had gone 590 minutes without conceding in the capital.
