Football Italia rounds up the winners and the losers from Week 5 of the Serie A season.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The winners…
Alex Manninger (Siena)
Undoubtedly Man of the Match at San Siro, he performed at least three decisive saves to give Siena a hard-earned point, ending Milan’s run of 10 consecutive home League victories. The former Arsenal and Fiorentina shot-stopper hasn’t always impressed in Serie A, but he was the hero of the weekend.
Daniele Franceschini (Sampdoria)
The veteran midfielder took control of a team spiralling towards a precipice. Without suspended talisman Francesco Flachi, Samp were inspired by the former Chievo and Lecce man, who scored the equaliser and constantly bombed forward when his teammates were losing heart. The Blucerchiati finally ended their 17-match winless streak with a 3-2 victory over Parma.
Francesco Totti (Roma)
The Olimpico waited with bated breath to see how Totti would react in the same fixture where he fractured his ankle in February. Granted, Richard Vanigli was in the stands where he couldn’t possibly do any more damage to national icons, but the Romanista passed this test and seems to be finding his form more and more with every game. If the Giallorossi are top of the table with their captain only 80 per cent fit, imagine how they’ll do when he fully recovers.
The losers…
Roberto Mancini (Inter)
He’s extremely fortunate that Hernan Crespo got injured when he did, as that put an end to the fairly suicidal trident experiment after just 33 uninspired minutes. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adriano aren’t exactly known for helping out in midfield, let alone with Esteban Cambiasso and Patrick Vieira missing. Cagliari took the lead and almost went 2-0 up, their counter-attack specialists relishing the space, yet the Nerazzurri equalised after returning to a 4-4-2. Coincidence? I doubt it.
Alberto Gilardino (Milan)
He may have just extended his contract until 2011, but he has got to get his act together. Andriy Shevchenko’s departure put extra pressure on his shoulders and so far Gila has failed to carry the load. Never having scored in the Champions League, he’s now running dry in Serie A as well and Roberto Donadoni took notice by sensationally dropping the Milanista.
Alberto Zaccheroni (Torino)
Zac only took charge three days before the start of the season, but when a team disappears from the field for 20 minutes after conceding a goal – ending up 4-0 down on home turf – then the Coach clearly isn’t giving them the confidence or character that’s needed. Bookies are taking bets on how long he can last with the fiery patron Urbano Cairo.
The goals….
Giacomo Tedesco (Reggina)
What better way to celebrate your 100th official match in the Amaranto jersey than hit a stunning volley into the top corner that’s so powerful it nearly breaks the net? To top it off, Tedesco’s goal at Atalanta secured Reggina’s first away draw in seven months.
Luca Toni (Fiorentina)
Last year’s Capocannoniere hit the woodwork and was denied repeatedly by Armando Pantanelli, but even the Catania goalkeeper could do nothing on this strike. Toni let the ball bounce before unleashing a fearsome right-foot finish that slammed in off the underside of the bar.
Vincenzo Montella (Roma)
L’Aeroplanino took flight for the second week running at the end of what has become a classic Roma move. Luciano Spalletti’s sides always try to move the ball around quickly to confuse opponents and this header, created by Francesco Totti and Max Tonetto, was a prime example.
The numbers…
Oddo on the spot
Massimo Oddo has scored 24 Serie A goals in his career and 19 of them were penalties. In five rounds, 12 of the total 16 spot-kicks have been awarded to the away team.
Samp shake off curse
Sampdoria ended their club record 17-match winless streak in Serie A. Since the 4-2 victory over Messina on February 12, the Blucerchiati had earned just seven points. Parma set a new low of their own, never having gone nine games without a win in the top flight before.
Atalanta grand
Simone Loria scored Atalanta’s 1,000th home goal in Serie A. Vittorio Schiavi netted the first in a 1-0 win over Lucchese on November 4, 1937. The Orobici were without a goal in 320 minutes of football, having fired blanks against Catania, Empoli and Lazio.
