Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar has no truck with modesty when talking about his “decisive” penalty save against Siena.

“It was important to stop that spot-kick, because it was a delicate moment of the match and we only had a one-goal advantage, so my save was both decisive and great,” said the Brazilian.


He stuck out a hand to parry Mario Frick’s penalty in the second half of their 2-0 win over Siena yesterday evening, an incident quickly followed by Hernan Crespo’s strike to seal up the scoreline.


“I hope this save will help us win the Scudetto. It’s a victory that gives further confidence to a team that is already brimming with it. Other sides will respect us even more now.”


That was their 11th consecutive victory between Serie A, the Champions League and Coppa Italia. Inter hope to maintain that run in Munich on Tuesday, where they’ll face Bayern in a head to head battle for the top spot in Group B.


“We’re certainly not going to Germany as tourists,” said Crespo. “We don’t like losing, even if we haven’t quite decided yet if it’s better to win the group or not.”


The former Chelsea star scored a sensational solo effort against Siena on Saturday, flicking the ball round Daniele Gastaldello before chipping Alex Manninger.


“At the time I didn’t realise it was such a great goal, but the real turning point was Julio Cesar’s penalty save. After that and my strike, we realised it would be very difficult for Siena to get back into the game.”

Inter prepare Beckham bid Tuesday 5 December, 2006

Reports in England are suggesting that Inter are ready to offer David Beckham a £5m per year contract.

The former Manchester United star is contracted to Real Madrid until June 2007, but it seems likely that he will leave Spain at the end of the season after failing to break into the plans of Fabio Capello.

According to The Sun, the Merengues annually keep half of the £20m earned by Beckham thanks to his sponsorship deals.

But Inter could lure the midfielder by offering him over £110,000 per week, plus the entire control of his multi-million pound image rights.

Transfer guru Ernesto Bronzetti, who deals with Real’s foreign deals, is sure this is the right road to follow if Inter want to finalise the operation.

“I know Beckham will come to Italy,” he explained. “He’s not so concerned about wages as what he earns from publicity contracts.”

Beckham, who had stated in the past that he wanted to end his career in the United States, seems keen on remaining in Europe despite the reiterated interest expressed by Alexi Lalas’ LA Galaxy.

As well as Galaxy, Celtic, Spurs and Israeli club Maccabi Netanya are also reported as possible destinations for the high-profile star.

The former England captain would make a perfect replacement for Luis Figo at Inter seeing as his contract is set to expire in the summer too.
