Mancini: 'We had it tough' Saturday 14 April, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberto Mancini insists Inter’s Scudetto success is “more difficult” than rivals Milan’s progress in the Champions League.
“The European Cup is a special and fascinating tournament that gives you the opportunity to play for the Intercontinental Cup, but in the long run Serie A remains a more difficult task,” assured the Coach.
Although the Nerazzurri are 18 points clear at the top of the League, their second round exit to Valencia raised doubts on the true validity of their season.
“Everyone tries to push their point of view,” he told the Press. “It’s like when people say Inter win because Juventus aren’t in the top flight. But the strongest side comes out at the end of a long competition, whereas in the Champions League you can get two just games wrong and go out.”
Rivals Milan have gone through to the semi-finals for the third year running and are the only remaining Italian side, but Mancini isn’t flying the flag for his country.
“Will we be cheering Milan on in the Champions League? That seems an exaggeration. Milan deserved to qualify, but I watch that tournament to see the great teams play, not to support anyone in particular.”
The Rossoneri had to go through a preliminary round to reach the European Cup after the Calciopoli scandal, though another new investigation risks creating further earthquakes in Italian football.
“It was already shameful to see what happened last summer, so to spend another year like that would be horrifying,” added Mancini.
“The only comment I will make is that I hope to have a relaxed summer, otherwise it’s like being caught in a time loop. In any case, fortunately, none of the incriminated matches involve us.”
Inter face a tricky test with fourth-placed Palermo on Sunday evening, a team that has been struggling badly and almost fired Coach Francesco Guidolin this week.
More importantly, they are preparing for Wednesday’s San Siro clash with Roma that could mathematically assign the Scudetto.
“We have to focus only on Palermo, as we could only seal the title next week if we manage to do well in Sicily. We need to be very concentrated, as it won’t be an easy tie.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns, although still not 100 per cent fit, while Maxwell and Walter Samuel are out of action.
“Ibra will start from the bench, that is certain, then we’ll see what we can do during the game. He’s not at the top of his form, but neither is he so out of shape that he can’t play.”
One final word from the former Sampdoria and Lazio legend was for Diego Armando Maradona, who is in hospital with chronic liver disease.
“I hope that he can get better soon and decides to live a more regular life. He has to be more careful for himself, those close to him and everyone who cares for Maradona. It is a great shame to see him like this.”
Inter squad: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar Soares; 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 11 Fabio Grosso, 13 Maicon, 16 Nicolas Burdisso, 23 Marco Materazzi, 77 Marco Andreolli; 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Luis Figo, 15 Olivier Dacourt, 19 Esteban Cambiasso, 21 Santiago Solari, 91 Mariano Gonzalez; 8 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 9 Julio Ricardo Cruz, 10 Adriano, 18 Hernan Crespo, 20 Alvaro Recoba.
