Totti almost ready, says Don Monday 13 November, 2006

Italy boss Roberto Donadoni has confirmed that Francesco Totti will return to the Giro Azzurro in 2007.
The Roma captain has again been omitted from the squad for Wednesday’s friendly with Turkey, but the tactician insists he will be back next year.
“I will call him in the future,” stated the tactician this evening. “His physical condition is getting better all of the time and he has more faith in his ankle. He was probably a little unsure of it after the fracture.
“He’s still lacking something when it comes to consistency and I will only call on him when he is ready. That has always been our agreement.”
Two players who have been selected, though, are new boys Alberto Aquilani of Roma and Milan’s Cristian Brocchi – who already impressed last term at Fiorentina.
“I called up Aquilani so that [Daniele] De Rossi wouldn’t be left on his own,” smiled the ex-Livorno Coach.
“In all seriousness, Aquilani has demonstrated himself to be one of the most interesting youngsters and it was right that he had an opportunity to show us what he can do.
“I think a call-up to the national side was an obligation.
“Brocchi? He’s in great shape and is doing really well. His entry is down to this season, though. If that wasn’t the case then I would pick myself as I did a little in my career as a player too…
“Last season was important for Brocchi, but that is the case this season as well. He must be thankful to who gives him a chance to play.”
Milan’s Alberto Gilardino has also been included after he was dropped for the qualifiers against Ukraine and Georgia last month.
“I endured some tough times too, but I didn’t think that Milan looked like a squad in crisis on Saturday,” he stated. “Gilardino is doing well. He’s young and needs to be helped.”
Reports in Italy over the past few days did suggest that Donadoni was pondering a call-up for Juventus youngster Matteo Paro, but opted to not reward him for his fine form in Serie B.
“I monitor everyone,” explained the tactician. “I saw Juventus against Napoli and a few other games. Paro is growing, he has excellent qualities and is playing regularly for a big club.
“Christian Rigano? He needs to just remain calm. He is at the top of the scoring charts and be made aware that he is being well monitored by me.”
The Azzurri took part in their first training session today, even if Donadoni suffered an early blow when he had to call in Emiliano Bonazzoli of Sampdoria for Vincenzo Iaquinta.
“The players seem in good shape, even if some are in better form than others,” he continued. “It’s a shame for Iaquinta, but his knee was so swollen that he couldn’t even walk properly.”
Donadoni was also requested to comment on rumours that Milan stopper Alessandro Nesta, left at home this week, was considering his international future.
“I don’t think a 30-year-old can be seen as decrepit,” he argued. “Until Nesta tells me that he doesn’t want to play again then this conversation is useless.
“He’s struggling physically at the moment, but he now has two months to recover completely and then I’ll make some evаluations.”
