Eto'o Is $39 Million Liverpool Target, Sun Says: Soccer Roundup

Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers.
ETO'O TO LIVERPOOL?
Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez approached Barcelona about signing Samuel Eto'o, the Cameroon striker who would cost at least 20 million pounds ($39 million), the Sun said.
Eto'o, who has also been linked with Arsenal, may leave the Spanish club at the end of the season after disputes with Ronaldinho and coach Frank Rijkaard, the Daily Mirror said.
Eto'o criticized Rijkaard after the coach said he refused to go on as a substitute against Racing Santander this month following a layoff with a knee injury. Eto'o watched the next two games from the stands before scoring in Barca's 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Feb. 25.
Liverpool's takeover by U.S. billionaires George Gillett and Tom Hicks should give Benitez the money to compete for the forward, the Mirror and Sun said.
Benitez tried to sign Eto'o from Real Mallorca two years ago as a replacement for Michael Owen, who left for Real Madrid.
Eto'o missed European champion Barcelona's 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League on Feb. 21. Five-time champ Liverpool, the 2005 winner, hosts Rijkaard's team in the return leg of the round of 16 tie on March 6.
