FORZA S.S. LAZIO1900Last season’s surprise packages have returned to earth this term as relegation strugglers Empoli host mediocre Lazio at the Stadio Castellani.
It is hard to believe that Empoli finished seventh and secured UEFA Cup football last term. The Tuscan minnows have been forced to resort to more modest ambitions this time around and come into this game in penultimate position. The gap between Alberto Malesani’s side and survival is starting to look ominous and a defeat could leave the Azzurri rock bottom.
However, last weekend’s performance against leaders Inter was highly creditable and the Empolesi can count themselves bitterly unlucky to have come away empty-handed. A 1-0 defeat didn’t tell the story of the game as they conceded a falsely awarded penalty kick and missed from the spot themselves in the latter stages. Another performance like last week could well be enough for three points, but the worry is finishing, as Malesani’s men seem to lack a killer touch.
Lazio President Claudio Lotito believes that the Aquile are back on track after a 2-1 win over Sampdoria, but consistency isn’t achieved in one game. The Biancocelesti are starting to regain their confidence and seem boosted by their Coppa Italia exploits, but they don’t have the swagger they displayed last year. The addition of Rolando Bianchi, Stefan Radu, David Rozehnal and Ousmane Dabo made the capital club one of the biggest spenders in the window and the new men could provide the momentum they so badly need.
The season could still be saved for Delio Rossi’s men if they can piece together their first winning run of the campaign and even UEFA Cup qualification isn’t out of the question. However, the relegation zone is just as close and is a terrifying prospect for the 13th placed side. This truly is a must-win psychologically if not mathematically.
Lazio have enjoyed their trips to deepest Tuscany and haven’t been beaten at the Stadio Castellani since 1997. However, this term they have been poor travellers with six draws and just one win. A share of the spoils wouldn’t be disastrous for Rossi, but it’s time last season’s third-placed side stopped settling for second best.
Empoli are likely to field former Lazio man Felice Piccolo at the heart of the defence with Francesco Pratali still nursing a knee injury and Richard Vanigli also out of action. Claudio Marchisio has a heel complaint and crucial playmaker Sebastian Giovinco could miss out with a foot injury he sustained against Fiorentina last week. Striker Luca Saudati is likely to sit on the bench after missing a penalty against Inter.
Rossi still has a vast injury list. Mourad Meghni, Fabio Firmani, Luciano Zauri, Lorenzo De Silvestri and Mobido Diakite are joined on the sidelines by midfield ace Massimo Mutarelli, who has a hip problem. New boys Rozehnal and Radu may have to settle for seats on the bench.
Keep an eye on: Tommaso Rocchi (Lazio) – The former Empoli hitman scored a stunning winner against Sampdoria last week and may have found his shooting boots at last.
Last season: Empoli 1-1 Lazio
