Lotito: Lazio need new arena
Friday 25 April, 2008
Lazio President Claudio Lotito has outlined his desire to build the Biancocelesti a new stadium all of their own.
The Aquilotti currently share the Stadio Olimpico with city rivals Roma, but Lotito believes that a new home is essential both for the team and the economical health of the club.
“If we were to have stadiums with different characteristics, we would have different gate receipts,” explained Lotito.
“If I were to succeed in my project of constructing a ground solely for Lazio, the Biancocelesti could cash £80m more every season which could be invested in the team.”
The 50-year-old Roman took control of Lazio in 2004 after former owner Sergio Cragnotti left the club in serious financial trouble.
“We have invested £42m and I am also paying debts I inherited when I took over. Players contracts need to be in line with where we are and, unfortunately, our gate receipts are falling.”
Italian clubs rarely own their stadiums, making their upkeep a secondary concern. Some have blamed the state of Italian grounds for football violence and declining attendance numbers.
Italy had hoped that money would come for new stadia from a successful bid to host Euro 2012, but the event went to Poland and Ukraine instead.
Whether Lotito’s proposal will ever come to fruition depends on the outcome of the Roman mayoral election which is being held at the moment.
One of the candidates has expressed a desire to help both Roma and Lazio build new arenas
