Juve's sad return to San Siro
Saturday 6 January, 2007
Teenage hitman Willy Aubameyang sealed Milan’s 3-2 Trofeo Berlusconi victory, as Juventus are left with a defeat and growing injury crisis.
Giorgio Chiellini, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Raffaele Palladino suffered new setbacks. The Rossoneri and Bianconeri faced off for the 16th edition of the Trofeo Berlusconi, but it was an unusual occasion at San Siro. This tie was postponed from August due to Milan’s Champions League commitments and was the first meeting since Juve’s demotion to Serie B.
Pavel Nedved was able to start, as his five-match ban does not apply to this tournament. After two minutes Pippo Inzaghi got in front of Boumsong and Chiellini, forcing Gigi Buffon into a fantastic fingertip save.
Juve hit back with Palladino’s spectacular right-foot volley lashed inches over the bar, but Chiellini limped off with a serious thigh strain early on. Alberto Gilardino chested down the ball and struck it past the post with the outside of his right foot, Inzaghi also turning wide in another good opportunity.
Zeljko Kalac pushed an Alessandro Del Piero angled drive round the upright and from the resulting corner kick Palladino nodded a free header over.
Milan broke through on the half-hour mark from ex-Juve star Inzaghi. They stroked the ball around well and Cristian Brocchi’s low cross was sidefooted in from six yards, thanks in part to Boumsong’s slip.
Gilardino nodded over, but moments later Juventus equalised. Kalac did well to parry David Trezeguet’s tap with his legs, but could do nothing on Nedved’s follow-up. Yet their injury worries continued in defence, as Boumsong also went off with a calf problem, making way for Jonathan Zebina.
Both teams made tactical changes at the break, Daniele Bonera moving to right-back and Yoann Gourcuff behind Inzaghi in a Christmas Tree formation. Buffon flew to tip Clarence Seedorf’s free kick out from under the bar, but when Marcelo Zalayeta was sent clear, Paolo Maldini slid in with a decisive intervention. From the corner kick, Valerio Fiori parried the Uruguayan’s header.
Milan have always struggled on set-pieces and Del Piero was left completely unmarked for a glancing header on Nedved’s free kick. Maldini made way for 17-year-old Darmian – two decades his junior – while Valeri Bojinov came on for Palladino after a suspected sprained knee.
The lead lasted less than a minute, Brocchi flicking a cross into the centre for Seedorf to nod in from six yards and make it 2-2. Former Fiorentina midfielder Brocchi was on fine form and his shot whistled past the post, but it was a new face who made the difference.
Five minutes from time, teenage substitute Willy Aubameyang got behind his marker to nod in Andrea Pirlo’s sweeping cross at the back post.
