Deschamps ready for exit Saturday 17 February, 2007

Didier Deschamps admits his time on the Juventus bench could end in the summer even if he achieves promotion.

“I am not thinking about next season. I came here to take Juve back into Serie A. I have another year on my contract, but this means nothing,” said the Coach.


Brought in when the club was facing demotion with a 30-point penalty – later reduced to nine on appeal – Deschamps has succeeded in taking the Bianconeri to the top of the table just past the halfway stage.


However, recent disappointing results, above all throwing away 2-0 leads against both Arezzo and Vicenza, prompted wild speculation over who would replace him next term.


“It has been a difficult week for us, partly because of all the talk around the side. Today we all put a little more concentration into the task,” he said of the 5-0 win over Crotone.


“Some people may think that Juventus shouldn’t run into any difficulties in Serie B, but the reality of the situation is different.”


If Napoli fail to beat bottom of the table Arezzo on Sunday, the Bianconeri will be clear at the top of the standings.

2007 has got off to an auspicious start for Alessandro Del Piero with seven goals in six official games this year, eight if one includes his strike in the Trofeo Berlusconi back in early January. His explosive strike rate his seen him take top spot in the scorer’s chart. “This hat-trick was just as satisfying as the other four I’ve scored over the course of my career. I’m particularly happy about my first and second goals this afternoon. The scorer’s chart? I’m not thinking about that right now but I’ll carrying on fighting right to the end. I’m also happy with the whole team’s performance, we’ve proved once again the quality we can produce at home. Now we just need to repeat that on our travels”.

We needed a win like this to get our confidence back and to show the harmony that exists, and has always existed, within this team. This was a display of absolute assurance across the field”. Juventus chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli was a happy man this evening as he spoke to Juventus Channel about his team’s decisive victory over Crotone. One of the day’s highlights for Cobolli Gigli was the performance of captain Del Piero. “He surprises us every time. With every goal he scores he demonstrates the desire he has not just to play, but to play with style. There’s no doubt about it, he’s a true champion”. Special mention also went to Nedved and Trezeguet, both of whom covered themselves in glory over the course of the 5-0 win. “Nedved also deserves a mention. He was incredible today from first to last. He represents the spirit this team needs to return to the highest levels. Trezeguet? The only thing missing from his performance today was a goal, but he’ll get one next week against Modena”. And finally, the chairman was in no doubt about the secret to today’s success. “The team have realised that their mind needs to be in the right place for all ninety minutes”. If their focus endures for the rest of the season, they’ll be back in Serie A in no time.

Nedved: “We need to maintain this attitude”




The Czech champ was in a reflective mood as he gave his post-match analysis to the attending press. “After the two draws we wanted to show just what we can do when we put our minds to it. The motivation and the desire to win made all the difference today but we need to have the same attitude every time. Juventus has always played against the ‘little teams’ as if it were the final of the Champions League and that’s exactly how we must approach games this season as well. It’s not always easy when teams are so fired up so we’re all very happy for the three points”. Nedved has never been one for complacency and he earmarked the approach today as the missing piece in the puzzle over the last few weeks. “The last twenty minutes at Vicenza must serve as an example for us. We can’t let that happen again. We have to stay in top gear throughout every game, we can’t take our foot off the gas even for a minute”. Let that be a warning to the rest of the field.
