RONALDO IN SHOCK MADRID MEETING
WORLD EXCLUSIVE Man United star's chance encounter with Real officials in Dubai hotel
By Simon Mullock
CRISTIANO Ronaldo met Real Madrid officials during his mid-season break in Dubai.
Sir Alex Ferguson gave his blessing to the trip after deciding to rest Ronaldo last weekend.
But United were shocked to discover - after a Sunday Mirror Sport investigation - that Madrid officials had been staying at the same hotel.
Quizzed by United yesterday, Ronaldo insisted it was a chance meeting and that he had bumped into the Real delegation as he was leaving the hotel.
But in Spain, sources close to Real Madrid claim that club officials outlined their future plans to Ronaldo and his agent, who was with him.
Real's delegation were in Dubai visiting a football academy in the area.
There is no suggestion that Ronaldo, who is 22 tomorrow, and Madrid were involved in illegal talks.
But the Old Trafford hierarchy are becoming tired by the continued specualation linking their young star with a summer move to the Bernabeu. In Spain Ronaldo is openly named as Real's prime transfer target for the summer.
Ronaldo has a desire to play in Spain one day and both Real and Barcelona have made it clear they would be interested in signing him.
Ferguson has insisted Ronaldo, who still has more than three years to run on his current contract, is not for sale.
Old Traf ford chief executive David Gill has said United would not even sell the Madeira-born ace for a world record £45m.

'WAYNE CAN BE OUR KEY MAN'
BARCLAYS PREMIERSHIP PREVIEW: TOTTENHAM v MANCHESTER UNITED, TODAY, 4PM
SIR ALEX FERGUSON believes Wayne Rooney's return to the goal standard can clinch the title for Manchester United.
Rooney has hit four goals in his last three outings after going more than 10 hours without finding the net and Ferguson feels his £30million striker has hit top form at the perfect time.
The Old Trafford manager said: "Wayne's goalscoring will make the difference in the title race. He is just coming to the top of his game at the right time for us. I said some weeks ago that if he could get into that scoring one goal a game thing, with the odd goal here and the deciding goal there, that would make a hell of a difference to our season.
"We have not had that from him for a while and if he continues with this run of goals then without question it will give us a massive chance. I feel he is coming into the kind of form he was in last season, which was unbelievable."
Ferguson (right) added: "I think naming Wayne as a subst it ute for the Portsmouth FA Cup game last weekend was worth doing. It gave him an opportunity to sit on the bench and realise just how important he is to us.
"It was only an hour's rest but it seemed to galvanise him. He came on a fresh player almost and that was important to us.
"His goals have given me real encouragement for the rest of the season."

I'D HATE TO WIN GOLDEN BOOT AND LOSE TITLE!
BARCLAYS PREMIERSHIP PREVIEW: TOTTENHAM v MANCHESTER UNITED, TODAY, 4PM CRISTIANO RONALDO EXCLUSIVE
Simon Mullock
CRISTIANO RONALDO insists winning the Golden Boot will mean nothing if Manchester United's title challenge ends in failure.
The Portuguese winger has been in sensational form as United have set the pace in the Premiership and is just behind Chelsea striker Didier Drogba at the top of the League goal-scoring charts.
Ronaldo has netted 14 times in the League this season - and another goal will enable him to cash in on the bet he struck with Sir Alex Ferguson at the start of the campaign.
But it's a sign of the 21-year-old's growing maturity that he will be happy to see Drogba take the glory as the Premiership's top scorer if United go on to clinch the title for the first time since he came to Old Trafford three years ago.
"Something like the Golden Boot doesn't concern me," said Ronaldo. "I want to win the Premier League. We have been the best team in England so far, but that will count for nothing if we let our standards slip.
"Of course I enjoy scoring goals, but the pleasure comes from what it means to the team. Seriously, I don't think about myself. I am a team player.
"People tell me I've changed my style, but my personality on the field is the same as it's always been. I have just grown up. I am more mature as a footballer and off the pitch."
Ronaldo became Public Enemy No.1 after being blamed for sparking the incident which saw United team-mate Wayne Rooney sent off in Portugal's penalty shoot-out win over England in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
It was only when United manager Ferguson assured the winger that it would be folly to run away from his accusers that Ronaldo decided his immediate future remained at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo revealed it was Fergie who put the smile back on his face with the bet that will see him laughing all the way to the bank if he finds the net against Tottenham today.
He said: "Mr Ferguson is serious about football, but he also has a sense of humour. Our bet is something we laugh about every time I score a goal. "I am enjoying my life. My experience at the World Cup has made me a much better player because I am a stronger person.
"For me, the reaction of the fans after the World Cup was not a problem. I don't think about them, I only think about myself and how I am going to play. The reaction of the fans is not a problem because I am so concentrated."
And Ronaldo warned the world's defenders that he can get even better. He added: "Every year I try to improve my game.
"I came to Manchester when I was 18 and the pace of my development quickened, but I am not the finished player yet.
"My ability, the tricks, they are all natural to me. But I still work hard on improving my skills. I know natural ability can get better with more practice.
"When I take free-kicks, I try to strike the ball as straight and as true as possible. When I connect well, the trajectory of the ball is different to what other players produce. But it is just my natural way of hitting the ball.
"I play football with passion. I hope people see that in the way I play the game."
